His name is Finch. He's about 10 years old, born in captivity, released into the wild in 2024. He's since fathered three litters of pups.

He's also one of fewer than 40 red wolves left on the entire planet, 22 known, collared adults plus 12 to 16 surviving pups from this year's litters. Every single one lives in one place: eastern North Carolina's Albemarle Peninsula, in and around the Alligator River and Pocosin Lakes refuges.

Wildlife photographer Shannon Emmel went looking for them anyway. She spotted one in the distance, zoomed in, and realized what she was looking at. Red wolves live in tight family packs, a breeding pair and their pups from different years, so spotting one alone like this is rare on its own.

Emmel's own words: "He nonchalantly popped out of the field close to us. My reaction? Overwhelming awe, the experience is surreal. They are absolutely amazing. I know my photos give the impression they are easy to see, but they're actually very hard to find, so I consider myself extremely lucky."

This summer, one of the few wild red wolves left was killed by a vehicle strike. Car strikes are the leading cause of red wolf deaths.

There's a known fix: wildlife crossings, bridges or tunnels built specifically so animals can cross without ever touching the road. This project uses underpasses.

Wildlife crossings don't just protect the wolves. They protect drivers too, these same collisions injure and kill people, not just the animals they hit.

Here’s the good news: all $31.25 million needed for 11 wildlife passages along the highway that cuts through their refuge is already secured. The money’s there. Design is underway. Construction is expected to start in 2028. It’s slow, but it’s coming, and it’s already paid for.

Here's what you can do now: North Carolina lawmakers are weighing a bill for a Red Wolf license plate. Tell them you support it and think it's a great way to celebrate red wolves' comeback while investing in their future.
