A sentence in the midst of several specific instructions reminding us that we’re called, not merely to a set of rules, but to a relationship where I might please or disappoint my Lord. We’re invited to get to know him!

The Bible isn’t simply a text book for life or a rule book for living.

It’s a book revealing God’s heart, a place for fellowship with him where you can hear his voice & experience his love.

Beware bitterness. It may not be as noisy as anger but it’s just as hideous. It’s rooted in resentment & is an ugly weed that needs to be rooted out.

You’re in Christ now, so put it to death with the strength he supplies. Celebrate his awesome grace & abound in thanksgiving.

“You did not so learn Christ” Ep4:20

Such an extraordinary sentence demonstrates that Christianity isn’t a set of rules or moral principles. Jesus invited his followers, “Learn of me”. He’s the one we focus on, spend time with, admire, celebrate, are increasingly preoccupied by.

Christians are not simply formerly bad people now trying to be good.

They’ve been radically changed. They WERE formerly DARKNESS but now ARE LIGHT in the Lord. Ep5:8.

Slaves were included among the believers in NT churches, but they too were urged to give up the futile lives they formerly lived as unbelievers.

Their minds were no longer darkened.
Transformed because now in Christ, though still slaves, they’re new creatures. Ep4:18.

I don’t have to climb up into God’s grace. I don’t have to attain to it. That’s the wonder of it! It comes to me where I am in all my vulnerability & even self despair. It simply isn’t earned. It’s freely given to frail believers!

Wonderful grace of Jesus! It sets me free!

The phrase “full surrender” used to frighten me as a new Christian. If “I surrendered all” what would God do with me? Where would he send me?”

I had yet to know him, understand his ways, experience his love, comprehend his awesome skill of winning our hearts & transforming us.

Don’t try to do Christianity alone. Jesus ascended on high & gave gifts to men. These gifts of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors & teachers are to equip the saints & help bring them to maturity.

Without them Paul fears we’ll remain children tossed about by false doctrine.

Humility & gentleness were appropriate for Christians though they were despised in Greek culture as weakness appropriate for slaves.

Yet we’re also called upon to be strong in the Lord. Jesus was meek & lowly yet fearlessly strong.
They say you become like the one you worship.

Although they were new people with new resources in Christ, nevertheless Paul “urged” the Ephesians to walk worthy of their calling.

Christianity isn’t automatic. It doesn’t just happen. With confidence in God’s awesome supply of grace we must live out our new life in Christ.
