Below is a comparison of the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement to Trump’s 2026 Infinite Life Agreement.

They are NOT the same!

1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement:

• A NATO-era U.S.–Denmark treaty. Greenland was not a co-signer.

• Lets the U.S. establish and operate “defense areas” that both governments agree are needed. Thule (now Pituffik Space Base) is the main lasting result.

• Recognizes Danish sovereignty and Danish authorities’ right to move freely in Greenland.

• Gives the U.S. wide operational freedom inside those agreed areas: bases, troops, aircraft, supplies, exclusive jurisdiction over U.S. personnel there.

• Has no calendar expiration. It lasts as long as the NATO treaty does.

• Does not give the U.S. a veto over Chinese or Russian investment, mining, or civilian projects island-wide.

• Was updated in 2004 to note Greenland’s home-rule status. New bases still need Danish and now Greenlandic agreement in practice.

What Trump says the 2026 “Infinite Life” deal adds, although the official full text of the deal is not yet public:

• Greenland is treated as a party alongside Denmark, not just Copenhagen.

• Language of “permanent control over security, and all other needs,” with no end date—even if Greenland later becomes independent.

• Explicit ban: no U.S. “adversary” can have a base, a military presence, or make “sensitive investments” without U.S. written approval. The 1951 text never said that.

• A pledged large new U.S. military buildup, not just keeping the existing Pituffik footprint. This may be tied to Golden Dome missile defense.
