Let’s call this what it is, it’s not just hypocrisy, it’s moral fraud.

Franklin Graham had no problem demonizing Barack Obama, a faithful husband, scandal-free, disciplined, educated, Black man, the very embodiment of the “bootstraps” gospel white evangelicals preach about, as some kind of threat, even suggesting that he was antichrist.

Yet, the same Graham bows in reverence to Donald Trump, an adjudicated rapist, convicted felon, unrepentant racist, porn star banging, pathological liar, with a trail of infidelity, exploitation, documented racism, and associations with convicted child sex traffickers, and has the caucasity to call him “raised up by God.”

That’s not discernment, that’s deception, dishonesty, and disregard for the sacred text he claims to believe.

The standard didn’t change, the subject did. Obama’s integrity was dismissed because he was Black. Trump’s corruption is sanctified because he is white and politically useful.

Graham isn’t applying scripture, he’s weaponizing it. He ignores sin when it serves power, then quotes the Bible to justify the very wickedness it condemns. That’s not Christianity, that’s idolatry of whiteness, wrapped in religious language and draped in a flag. 

This is hypocrisy at its highest level: Calling evil good when it benefits you, and calling good evil when it threatens your power.

And then having the audacity to say God said it.

A few thoughts:

1) This attack should not have happened without Congressional authorization. This is no mere technicality -- it's the framer's foundational design for how the republic should wage war.

2) Khamenei's death is a great victory, but we've all been on this rollercoaster before. The U.S. and Israelis have taken out lots of leaders and rulers in these long wars.

3) I very very very much want the regime to fall, and I desperately want democracy to take root, but remember, we're ultimately relying in large part on civilian protesters (hopefully with the support of dissenting regime elements) to actually topple the regime.

4) If we rely on protesters (who possess magnificent courage), I'm worried we might see something like what happened to Iraqis who rose up against a defeated Saddam in 1991. It was a bloody massacre. That's a nightmare scenario.

5) Our forces have performed magnificently, and I'm hoping and praying that the Iranian response remains inept and ineffective. But it's dangerous to simply presume that it will.

6) If we take losses (or if we suffer economic disruption) that's when we'll see one of the consequences of failing to go to Congress. We're a divided country. Trump is a mercurial man.

7) Trump's temperament and character are one reason why it's silly to say, "If I'd support this under any other president, I should support this under Trump." He's not like any other president. Bad and dishonest leaders make me less confident in their plans.

8) If, however, the Iranian people can rally, if our attacks can prevent the regime from massacring civilians, then it will be a massive accomplishment and a great day for the U.S., Israel, and the world.

The paid grifters, partisan hacks, and bots are out in force—misleading people about the Constitution and the law—to defend Trump’s unconstitutional war.

Here’s an important Iran war PSA:

Contrary to what you may have heard about the War Powers Resolution (50 U.S.C. §§ 1541–1550), it does not allow the president to take military action for any reason for 60–90 days without congressional approval so long as the president notifies Congress within 48 hours.

Section 1541(c) of the War Powers Resolution states clearly:

“The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.”

Of the three cited authorities, not one indicates a presidential power to take unilateral (without Congress’s approval) offensive military action.

The first two authorities allow the president to take offensive military action but only with Congress’s express approval (Article I of the Constitution grants Congress the exclusive power to declare war).

The third authority allows the president to take defensive military action without Congress’s approval in the event of a specific type of national emergency, a sudden unforeseen attack on the United States (happening too quickly for Congress to meet) necessitating immediate action to protect Americans.

It’s for this last situation (or for situations in which the president introduces forces into hostilities unlawfully) that the War Powers Resolution provides for the oft-mentioned 48-hour report to Congress (§ 1543) and 60-day (up to 90-day) timeline (§ 1544). If there’s an attack in progress on the United States (i.e., currently happening), we expect the president to respond swiftly to neutralize the attack and protect Americans—and then we will hold the president to account.

The Framers of the Constitution agreed at the debates in the federal convention of 1787 that the president should have the “power to repel sudden attacks” but not the power to otherwise introduce forces into hostilities without congressional approval.

The War Powers Resolution does not confer any new authority on the president to take offensive military action without congressional approval—nor could it under our Constitution. It instead checks the president when, as the Framers contemplated, the president introduces our Armed Forces into hostilities to repel a sudden attack.

The fact that previous presidents have violated both the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution does not—and cannot—change the law or make any present military action lawful.
