My father showed us that nonviolence is not passive and it is not weak. It is love organized into action. It is courage disciplined enough to confront injustice without surrendering our humanity.

That truth still matters now. In this season of ongoing attacks on voting rights and efforts to turn us against one another, we are called to do more than react. We are called to organize, build, and move with the kind of moral force that can challenge systems and transform society.

My father did not just dream of a better world. He helped build the power to bring change, and that same work is still before us.

On August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law as my father looked on. It was not a gift. It was the result of sacrifice, courage, organizing, and nonviolent struggle.

I believe my father would be deeply troubled by the ongoing efforts to weaken voting rights and make fair representation harder to secure. But I also believe he would not want us to surrender to frustration or despair.

We have work to do. We must organize with discipline, demand new voting rights protections, and continue pressing toward a democracy where every voice is valued and every vote is protected.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling guts the Voting Rights Act and turns back the clock on the foundational promise of equality and fairness in our election systems.

Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was one of the last remaining federal protections for Black and brown voters against maps deliberately drawn to dilute their political power. That protection has been stripped away.

It is an outrage. But it is not a surprise.

It is part of an agenda that conservatives set in place decades ago to steal power from everyday people and then cling to that power for generations.

The court’s decision is motivated by politics and designed to give an upper hand to Donald Trump’s Republican Party, which faces the threat of losing the upcoming midterm elections.

We must pay attention to what happens next.

The fight now returns to the states. Legislatures — particularly those in the South — will rush to redraw districts before voting for the midterms begins in just a few months. Already, Louisiana and Florida are planning to redraw their maps, and we should not be surprised if others rapidly follow suit ahead of the midterms and 2028. Their politically-motivated power grab is meant to protect elected Republicans from any consequences for their failure to make groceries, gas, health care, or housing more affordable for you and your family. They want to cheat and choose their voters, instead of the voters deciding who they choose.

The mission before us is to restore the power of the people. There is no question our fight became harder today, but I know we are up for the battle.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling further weakens a law born out of sacrifice, struggle, and the determination of people who risked everything for the right to vote.

Voting rights remain essential to justice, representation, and the dignity of citizenship. This decision certainly weakens key protections and sets up a path that could make fair representation even more difficult.

This is a critical election year, and it is also a critical moment to call for new voting rights legislation.

Through Kingian Nonviolence, we can organize, strategize, and coordinate our efforts to combat voter suppression and create a pathway to restore and protect representation.

Register. Verify your status. Make a plan to vote. Help others do the same.

If we are serious about creating the Beloved Community, we must be serious about protecting and using the right to vote.
