A 26-year-old teacher, who was both a victim and key witness in an assault and rape case against self-proclaimed pastor Phathutshedzo “Prophet Muritho” Sikhuba, was shot and killed at Thengwe village, Mutale early on Saturday morning.

Police say she was returning from an all-night prayer service at Thengwe Matshetshete around 04:45 when an unknown gunman opened fire as she boarded a taxi. She was shot at close range and died at the scene.

A 69-year-old woman from Tshilamba and a 55-year-old taxi driver from Mulodi village were also shot and seriously injured.

Several spent cartridges were found at the scene. Police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder, with the motive still under investigation.

The victim had been central to the ongoing court case against “Prophet Muritho,” who faces charges of assault and rape.
