Former Alabama RB Mark Ingram made sure to bring up Alabamaβs β4th & 31β Iron Bowl when his colleagues on the @3xOptionShow were discussing the top CFB comebacks of all-time.
βWe call it the βGravediggerβ. Iron Bowl. 4th and 31. Jalen Milroe to Isaiah Bond in the corner,β Ingram said.
When asked why the play is referred to as the βGravediggerβ, here is what Ingram said:
βIt was 4th and 31. We put βem in a coffin and we grave dug βem.β πͺ¦π€£
With the concern of tornadoes in the Deep South this weekend, 17 years ago today during another outburst of harsh weather conditions @AlabamaMBB guard Mykal Riley made the most important three-pointer of his career on March 14, 2008, inside the Georgia Dome.
As the Crimson Tide trailed Mississippi State 59-56 in the final seconds of a quarterfinal game in the SEC Tournament, Riley launched his three-pointer that rattled around before dropping and sending the game into overtime.
The shot occurred at 9:33 p.m. EST. Five minutes later at 9:38 p.m. an EF-2 tornado touched down just west of the Georgia World Congress Center and 100 yards north of the Georgia Dome.
Halfway through overtime, television announcers said it sounded like a βfreight train,β while lights blinked and debris fell inside the arena. The game halted as players cleared the court and fans in the upper levels sought shelter.
If Rileyβs shot had not fallen the game ends at 9:33 p.m. and fans leaving the Georgia Dome would have walked into a tornado outside.
Somehow after the tornado passed, the teams finished the game as Mississippi State won 69-67 to end Alabamaβs season with a 17-16 record.
With structural damage to the Georgia Dome, the SEC moved all remaining games to Georgia Tech with just media, family and cheerleaders present. Georgia played twice on Saturday, defeating Kentucky and Mississippi State, to reach the final on Sunday as the Bulldogs won the tournament 66-57 over Arkansas.
