Today's local history "on this day" is the opening of the Shelby Park Nature Center in 2007. Right now is an amazing time to walk the trails, with the tickseed sunflowers in bloom.
On this day in 2007, the @MetroParksNash@ShelbyBottoms Nature Center opened, creating a kind of educational and programmatic resource for East Nashville that had long been a mainstay at the Warner Parks.

And back in 2023 we put together a Cumberland River recreation episode of @ThisIsNashville that helped get me on the water (kayak, not barge):

Today's on-this-day essay is about barges and other river traffic on the Cumberland. I happened to encounter a barge last night.
I watched thousands of bugs — and a few bats — in the powerful headlights.
Filling in as newscast host this week has been challenging — but the best perk is delivering the NashVillager Podcast very early in the morning, including a cameo from my kiddo today.
From the tallest building in Nashville, to our airport’s busiest year on record, superlative numbers are in the news this week.

Davidson County Election Administrator Jeff Roberts is retiring. I've always found him easy to reach for info, even amid very busy election days.
And he played ball for this #CuriousNashville story asking about "I Voted" stickers:

It's been an unprecedented run of days — and that includes just how much community support is rallying behind Nashville Public Radio. You can push your local WPLN newsroom to its goal now: https://t.co/G3cZGO2F52
Instead of federal funding, it will be community support that sustains Nashville Public Radio.
WPLN and WNXP need to raise another $20,000 today. This community has rallied this week — and you can help fill the funding gap at https://t.co/G9A48eVCJL.
Nashville Public Radio faces a $400,000 shortfall.
Our community has swooped in to contribute an amazing portion of that amount in the past few days — and we'd appreciate your help in getting us all the way: https://t.co/rtHAm4qc37
Update! The corpse flower known as "Athena" is now blooming at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville — and visiting hours are extended to 11 p.m. Thursday and 9-5 on Friday.

WPLN’s @roseamgilbert reports that a new wave of Kurds are coming to America. But today, America is a nation in turmoil.
And so was this one last fall — and we just learned that it was honored as best Arts Feature for stations of WPLN's size at the @PMJATweets conference.

New Orleans rapper @bigfreedia is beloved for her bass-heavy, booty-shaking club music. But when she headlines @nashvillepride, she’ll also take the LGBTQ festival to church with new gospel material.

What a gift from Jewly. She sifted through Tennessee's copious submissions to the NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest and highlights many great local artists here.
As the NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest Tour arrives in Nashville tonight, @RightByHerRoots finds the contest entries from local artists paint a varied picture of the local music scene. #TinyDeskConcert

As I filled in on newscasts and podcast this morning, I riffed a little bit about the birth of photojournalism (on this day in 1848). I forgot to mention visiting the early Tennessee photography exhibit @tnstatemuseum — and learning that McMinnville was a hotbed!
Did you know that the NashVillager Podcast is created fresh for you every morning before 6 a.m.?
It rounds up the day's news, includes some "on this day" history insights, and shares one of Nashville Public Radio's in-depth stories.
Every weekday!
