On the fifteenth of June 2020, a young reporter in Uttar Pradesh wrote to the state authorities to say he was being threatened. He named ten people.
Four days later, two men on the road shot him six times.
His name was Shubham Mani Tripathi.
He was twenty five, a local correspondent for a Hindi daily called Kampu Mail. Not a national newspaper, not a television face. A small paper in a small district, covering illegal sand mining and land grabbing in Unnao.
His reporting had worked. On the fourteenth of June he wrote on his own Facebook page that an illegal construction put up by what he called the famous land mafia had been demolished because of a report he had filed.
In the same post he wrote that they were enraged, and had filed a fake complaint against him with the district magistrate. He had also told people around him, plainly, that he thought he was going to be killed.
The next day he wrote to the authorities and named the men he was afraid of.
On the nineteenth of June, riding home on a motorcycle with a friend, he was shot near the milk market in Unnao. Six bullets, three of them to the head. He died shortly after.
Police later said the killing was arranged in retaliation for his reporting, and that four hundred thousand rupees had been paid to two shooters. Arrests followed.
Reporters Without Borders describes Uttar Pradesh as one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist, and says the ones most at risk are those who try to cover the sand mafia. The United Nations cultural body condemned his killing by name.
Sand is not a glamorous subject. It is dug illegally out of riverbeds at night, it is worth an enormous amount of money, and the people who control it in parts of India are effectively untouchable.
A twenty five year old at a small Hindi paper decided to write about it anyway. He told the state exactly who was coming for him, and the state did nothing, and they came.
Shubham Mani Tripathi was 25 years old when he reported the actual news in UP, on land grabs and sand mining. He was shot dead *after* complaining of death threats , in one of the most dangerous places to do real journalism in the world: Uttar Pradesh.
Bajrang Dal members bought a kilo of Biryani to confirm it was chicken Biryani. Confronted the owners and tipped-off the police in Bareilly, UP. The shop was later bulldozed.
god so the victim must die in order for supposedly progressive men to believe that she was violated,,, it's fuck patriarchy until one of your folks is involved
Watching Tarun Tejpal claim martyrdom and people still standing behind him is so tediously familiar. This playbook of predatory progressive men should at least NOW be recognised.
It's incredibly important to understand this: rape is not rape because it's violent, it's rape because a woman did not agree to or want a finger, a penis or an object inserted into her and it was done anyway. That is rape.
My warning to the RSS chaddiwalas —
If the RSS does not stop sowing divisions among the Scheduled Castes, then this time the community will neither think twice, nor care about anything, nor seek permission for a protest. We will simply descend in full force in front of the RSS’s doorsteps.
The last time we protested in Nagpur, RSS had to leave their office. This time, we will get it shut down altogether. In any case, the entire organisation is unregistered.
And remember, the community recognises your “salespersons” you have in the market. The community will go to their doorsteps as well.
A chicken biryani shop near the main Kanwar Yatra route in UP's Bareilly was razed to the ground and vendor Mohd Salman was detained after Bajrang Dal workers stormed the shop and confronted the owners.

Take screenshots. Report it to the police whether something comes off of the complaint or not.
Keep the record that you filed a complaint.
These men are just glorified sex traffickers and pimps in the garb of "Recruiters".
