Visionary filmmaker Thapelo Motloung is rewriting the script with his brainchild, the Soweto Film Market, a groundbreaking platform rooted in the township’s rich legacy of storytelling. In collaboration with Meta, Facebook, and Instagram, the Film Market is launching a Mobile Film Workshop during this year’s Soweto International Film Festival — equipping 200 young creators to tell powerful stories using only their phones.

Supported by legends like Dr John Kani and Dr Jerry Mofokeng, Motloung is turning Soweto into a hub of innovation, opportunity, and global storytelling. In an exclusive chat, we sat down with Motloung to dive deeper into his vision — from breaking down industry gatekeeping to positioning Soweto as the future of African cinema.

I was once told I don’t have a for TV growing up by a very popular figure that really broke me and had me feel as if I’m not good enough I had pimples as well I felt very ugly all I had was my confidence and some defence machanism which contributed towards insecurities
