This story = the perfect metaphor for Indigenous resilience.
“The search team conducted multiple sweeps from the air, attaching a long-range speaker to a helicopter on which they played a message from the children’s grandmother, in the Huitoto language”.

Indigenous groups faced off with Brazilian police, exchanging arrows and tear gas amid anger over a bill that would limit their ability to win protected status for ancestral lands https://t.co/UArXiTaLDj
Potentially catastrophic events are happening to #Brazil’s Indigenous peoples right NOW.
The consequences for them, and the rainforests that the planet relies upon, will be profound.
⚠️ Urgent: A dangerous backlash against Indigenous rights and the environment is underway in Brazil’s Congress this week. Here are some key updates you should know.
Vocês devem ter acompanhado a barbárie em Brasília hoje. Aquelas pessoas que chamamos de fascistas, o que há de mais abominável na política, invadiram a sede do palácio e o Congresso. Achamos que houve falta de segurança.
The current situation in #Brazil. Like in the US, it will likely accomplish little - but it underlines how democracy is under threat across the Americas.
That being said, the fact that this group has broken through security suggests a degree of complicity with at least some parts of the security and policing forces responsible for these locations. 4/
But their numbers are small and they are disorganised. This is a fringe movement. There is the potential for escalation, but that currently seems unlikely. 3/

This intersects with some important indigenous issues. Castillo was descended from Indigenous peoples, though did not identify as Indigenous himself.
Indigenous leadership in #Peru must be a part of dialogue re: constitutional reform.
The situation in #Peru is more complicated than western media reports.
1. Castillo did attempt a legislative coup.
2. He enjoys a lot of support in some quarters, enmity in Congress.
3. The constitution is deeply unpopular with no clear road to reform.

The issue is not whether Boluarte is a legitimate or popular successor, it is whether she can move the country towards badly needed constitutional reform. I asses this is the key step needed for long term stability.
