@linhpnguyen The focus as been on Vo Van Thuong because he was nominated by the Politburo to be the nominee for the new president, it was approved by the Central Committee and then was elected by the National Assembly (one dissenting vote?).

@linhpnguyen How do you explain Thuong's comment that Nguyen Phu Trong is a core leader of the party? Also who said "hard core"? I used "dyed in the wool". And as for apparatchik - I mulled using bureaucracy or oranisation. Apparatchik means a member of the party's apparat. Nothing sinister
