Dentistry has a role to play in reducing environmental impact while improving oral health.
In this blog, Mick Armstrong sets out the national action we’re calling for and shares the ways we’re supporting teams to take practical and meaningful steps towards sustainability.

I am both honoured and humbled to accept this recognition.
At Covid lockdown dentistry effectively ceased to exist for millions across this country.
I set out to ensure that it could survive for colleagues and bounce back for patients.
@ShawnCharlwood Fixing it remains unfinished business, but the fact this service is still dominating the headlines and political debate is down in no small part to Shawn’s efforts.
Our congratulations to @ShawnCharlwood, awarded the MBE for services to dentistry.
Shawn set out to voice his colleagues' concerns and those of the patients they serve.
He fought and won the argument that NHS dentistry was fundamentally broken.
Dentistry has seen the worst collapse in access in the NHS, and the weakest recovery.
A generation of failed contracts and savage cuts have taken their toll.
An uptick is welcome, but to restore care to millions we need real reform and sustainable underfunding.
We're delivering 2,500,000 more NHS dentist appointments - and the biggest sustained increase in dental school places since 2007, with a dental school in every region.
Lots done, lots more to do on NHS Dentistry - incl. reforming dental contract - but we're making progress.
@Bubblejet Data is held by the NHS.
https://t.co/JNt1EHH02B gathers and reports accessibility status, but not in an intuitive way.
You can find information at entries for individual practices, but you cannot easily search and filter by access status.
We’ve done the maths.
Claims of ‘price gouging’ in private sector are a fiction dreamed up by the Chancellor, to try and show she on the side of patients while failing to support NHS provision.
The facts are that loss-making NHS work is fuelling the exodus from the service.
"At the heart of the problem is the NHS dental contract says @william_pett from @HealthwatchE
"It's not working for dentists and it's not working for patients."
Spot on.
We have a system that suits government accountants, but fails this profession and the millions we serve.
"Without dental practices doing private dentistry many would not be able to carry on providing NHS work," says @EddieCrouch.
No health professional can be expected to lose money delivering NHS care.

"Millions make a positive decision to go private," says @eddiecrouch
But many have felt forced to do so or simply gone without the care they need as a direct result of political choices made at the Treasury and the Department of Health.

Yes, prior to COVID we still had millions struggling to access care.
That figure is now 14m - or 1 in 4 of England’s adult population.
We need government to go further and faster @thebda
Letter received @drlukeevans…
This is a subject close to our hearts.
Access to dentistry - including life saving oral cancer screenings - remains on the floor.
When early diagnosis is so key, the access crisis is costing lives.
We’ll get back to you, & happy to meet @TheBDA
Choices made by successive govts to leave a failed contract unreformed, and to starve NHS dentistry of funding have failed millions in every corner of this country.
@SteveDarlingMP we hope you'll join the debate in the Commons at 7PM Monday to urge the Govt to act without delay.
NHS Dentistry is failing us here in Torbay. Too many of you have told me how you struggle to get dentist appointments, and this is a sign of the broken NHS dental contract which fails to entice dentists to join the NHS.
I was shocked to hear from Health Minister Stephen Kinnock that when they came to power in 2024 the Government were met with a £392 million underspend in NHS dentistry, because dentists were not incentivised.
That's why I am running a petition to increase the number of NHS dentistry appointments available in coastal areas and fix the broken NHS contract. Sign my petition to improve dentistry in Torbay here: https://t.co/BwiiGl9y3d

Listening to health questions yesterday in Parliament @SKinnock repeated that underspend in nhs dentistry is down to £36 million . Several FOIs I have with ICBs and answers shows how easy it is for obfuscation on the apparent ring fence from Finance departments in ICBs @TheBDA
