There's never been better web-slinging than Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The action is some of the best of any Spider-Man film, and alongside a story about growth, healing, and honesty, it's an odyssey for Peter. It's not perfect but it's amazing and spectacular.
Matt Johnson's Tony is a warm, nostalgic look back on the summer of '75. It feels so real I wish I could visit. Antonio Banderas as Chef is the perfect mentor for who Anthony Bourdain would become. While Bourdain is flawed and sad, it's easy to fall for him again, all the same.
The Odyssey is deep and resonant, filled with incredible talent, particularly Damon, Holland, and Hathaway. Nolan unlocks the age-old story with one scene as the key. At its heart, the film mourns the horrors and futility of war, and the callous hearts of men.
Sam Neill was one of my favourite people that I met at TIFF. He was wonderful. When every interview is often rushed or short, he decided he just wanted to chat after, even though the publicists were trying to get me out. We talked about Toronto and the fest; it was surreal. RIP
