Where Is the Accountability for Abbey Gate?

Five years have passed since the Abbey Gate bombing. Thirteen American service members and nearly 170 Afghans were killed. Yet many of the senior terrorists we identified at the center of the plot are still alive and free.

For years, the story of Abbey Gate has largely stopped with ISKP. ISKP claimed the attack. But claiming an attack and understanding the network that carried it out are two very different things.

When we reconstructed the twelve days before the bombing, a much bigger picture emerged. We identified the men involved in authorizing the attack, selecting and preparing the bomber, moving him to Kabul, providing the explosive vest, collecting intelligence at the airport, controlling the checkpoints, and communicating as the bomber moved toward the Marines at Abbey Gate.

Now look at where we are five years later.

Key terrorists remain at-large. Sirajuddin Haqqani is free. Hafiz Haqqani is free. Sanaullah Ghafari is free. Rajab Salahuddin is free. Abdullah bin Laden is free. And in March 2025, the United States removed the longstanding $10 million reward for information leading to Sirajuddin Haqqani's arrest.

These weren't people sitting somewhere on the edges of this plot. They are men we found at the center of it. That matters because you cannot have accountability if you don't even know who you're looking for.

Five years later, remembering the thirteen Americans we lost at Abbey Gate also means getting the story of what happened to them right. It means knowing who was responsible. And it means asking why so many of those people have never been held accountable.

A lot of you asked me to go back and explain what actually happened in Spain two weeks ago. So I did.

What happened in Ceuta wasn't just a massive migration surge. The more interesting question is how tens of thousands of people were mobilized toward one border so quickly, the role social media played, and what happened when Spain was suddenly overwhelmed.

And this story isn't over.

Don’t Just Research the Candidate. Map the Coalition.

When most people research a political candidate, they look at the candidate’s website, positions, interviews, and maybe campaign donors. But that only tells you part of the story. Go one layer further and look at the organizations surrounding them. Who endorsed the candidate? Who is organizing and mobilizing voters? Who is raising and spending money? And, perhaps more importantly, which organizations keep showing up together across different races?

Then go another step. Don’t just look at what those organizations say about the candidate. Look at what they tell their own members about their objectives, priorities, and why they want that candidate elected. Those two conversations are not always the same.

One endorsement may tell you very little. But when the same organizations repeatedly support the same candidates, you start to see a pattern. You can begin to map the political coalition being built around them and understand the different interests being brought together to gain political power.

And remember, political power isn’t à la carte. You may support a candidate because of housing, healthcare, wages, immigration, national security, or any other issue that matters to you. But when that candidate wins, you aren’t empowering only the policy that brought you through the door. You are also strengthening the organizations and coalition that helped put that candidate there.

Bottom line: Don’t stop at the candidate. Map the network around them.
