Thanks Drew. Great stuff, as always. I keep thinking back, to my own detriment probably, to the James Pearce jr situation and just the 8 game suspension for that.
Understanding we don’t have an outcome with Jacobs yet and Pearce is on track for the charges to be dropped and it’s a very different case - how is the nuclear option of Jacobs missing the season or even being out of the league on the table when it seemed like Pearce’s was far more violent? Is it just the potential for video evidence? And a big mound of my feeble legal understanding?

Topic: Correlation between a fantasy player’s performance and that player’s poor real-life team defense

I hear a fallacy out there often that because player XYZ plays on a team with a bad defense then that player’s offense won’t be able to let up and will be constantly pushing for points. We hear about this primarily with QBs and pass catchers. Think Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals last year or expectations for the Chicago Bears this upcoming season.

In reality when a team’s defense is bad it usually just equates to that player being off the field more often and the opposing team having possession of the ball for longer periods with the ability to run out the clock quicker via running the ball. I’d rather have a player on a good offense with a good-average defense than a player on a good offense with a bad defense. Scenario A worst case is you’re looking at production for your player for 3 quarters and then the foot being taken off the gas in quarter 4 in the event of a blowout.

Scenario B frequent case is the team is getting blown out for 3 quarters but does well in the final quarter of garage time catch up. Worse case is the game has gotten so far away by quarter 4 that your player and the stars are getting pulled due to a game being all-but-over and looking ahead to next week

Topic: Running backs

A catch by a running back has more value than a carry. A lot of great work has been done by JJ Zachariason on this over at Late Round QB. If I’m ranking traits in a running back I’m putting a work horse role at the top of that list but those roles have been fading in recent years. Teams are telling us that they prefer running back committees, possibly due to the high injury rate at the position, leading to fewer and fewer work horse roles.

If all of the work horse RBs are off the board we can break ties with RBs that receive targets. Give me the RB2 for an NFL team that is expected to get 7-10 targets per game over an RB that’s stuck in a smaller side of a committee, playing behind a bad OL, and or playing in a poor offensive environment

Topic: Trade Etiquette

Are you guilty of sending out blind trade offers rather than initiating a back and forth dialogue with your league mate? We all do it. It’s easier to just click the buttons. But what’s the success rate on pulling off those blind trade offers?

It’s been my experience over 15 years of fantasy that a little dialogue and good manners can greatly improve the odds of a trade getting done. Shoot them a courtesy message and express some interest, ask what they are looking for in turn. Take an interest (or appear to take an interest) in their needs. Maybe you learn something new from them that gives you extra data points to get a trade done like who their personal favorite NFL team is or maybe they really don’t value a player as high as you do.

Any little extra efforts that can get the trade over the line help

Topic: Trades

Always try to come away with the top player in the trade. Seek out trades where you can package several smaller pieces and get the bigger piece in return.

This Rule of Thumb ties in closely with the similar Rule of Thumb of Consolidating Up. Our starting line ups are how we win match ups. There are a finite number of players we can plug into our starting line up. This leads us to prioritize improving the starting line up over bench depth generally.

Win trades and increase your probability of winning match ups by packaging bench and flex pieces in order to receive the higher valued asset in return and in doing so further improve starting line up. Rinse and repeat.
