I'm ICO. You ask if I still remember the first time I played that game? Oh, of course I do.
I clearly remember that I missed the last subway because of overtime, so I had to walk home. It was dark on the road, but when I looked up, I could still see big, dark clouds in the sky. So I picked up my pace. But it seemed like I was always the unlucky one. With a flash of bright light, the rain poured down, and I got completely drenched. In that moment when the lightning lit up everything around me, I saw what looked like an empty shop ahead. I didn't know what it sold, but I could go in and get out of the rain for a while.
There is a sign said "Dream Shop," and under that, in smaller letters: "Deep Healing & Relaxation." I thought it might be some kind of meditation, yoga, or tarot place, so I didn't think twice and went in.
The moment I stepped inside, the lights suddenly turned on. There was no one in the shop, only a machine right across from the door. It looked strange, all black, with a shiny silver finish, and a screen on top, like those old-school arcade machines from the 90s. On the body of the machine, there was a big "TOY" logo. I walked closer. There was also a button shaped like a dog head, but it didn't look like a normal dog. There was a hole where the mouth should be, as if something could pass through, and a lock symbol on the head. Next to the button, there was a line of text: "Press the button to start deep relaxation."
The rain outside kept getting heavier. It didn't look like it would stop anytime soon, so out of curiosity, I pressed the button. A few character options appeared on the screen. They all wore black tight suits, and their heads were animal-shaped, some like dragons, some like dogs, some like cats, and some like bulls. One of them looked just like the button on the machine: a dog head with a lock symbol on it. I liked the one that looked like a cat. The moment I pressed the button, a message popped up: "Once started, you cannot pause midway. You must complete the full experience." I wanted to give it a try, and I figured even if I wanted to quit halfway, I could just unplug it.
The moment I pressed "Yes," my body suddenly went limp and I collapsed on the floor. Black liquid seeped out from the cracks in the floor, cool, tingly, like snakes crawling on me, or ants biting me. I got scared, I wanted to back out, I tried to crawl to the wall and want to unplug it. But it was as if the liquid knew what I was thinking. The more I resisted, the tighter it bound me. Finally, from my feet up to my thighs, from my thighs to my shoulders, and then to my head, my whole body was wrapped tightly in that liquid.
Eventually, the liquid stopped moving. I knew I had become the character on the machine, because I could feel ears on my head, and four indentations on my forehead. I traced them with my fingers. They spelled the word "TOY." My hands and feet must have turned into animal paws. I could feel the soft pads rubbing against my skin as I moved. I tried curling my fingers and toes and could still feel the shape of those pads. In front of me was a small hole for breathing, and through it I could vaguely see the straps around my body.
Just as I started to enjoy this transformation, the liquid started moving again. It tied my hands behind my back, and kept adding more pressure to the suit on my body. I could barely take it. But the worst part came next: the breathing hole in front of me got sealed shut. I felt terrible, I could hardly breathe, my body was getting hotter, and the suit pressed harder and harder. Just when I thought I was about to suffocate, the pressure suddenly vanished. The whole suit turned back into black liquid and flowed back under the floor. Then a voice came from the machine: "Experience complete."
I was soaked all over, not from the rain, but from all the sweating. By then, the rain outside had stopped too. I grabbed my things and fled that strange shop in a panic.
That's my story.
