how to write a book
- mix up the alphabet really well
- add in your emotional baggage on accident
- now write witty banter to cover up that mess haha
- hmm backspace a few lines
- yes that's it backspace it all
- take a snack break
- this is fine, this is how it's done
BEFORE WRITING: I adore writing it is my soul and my passion and my love.
WHILE WRITING: i am crying blood and cannot remember the word for the thingie thing
AFTER WRITING: my heart is so full!! look at this thing i made!!! I can't WAIT to write again!!
Brain: I can write entire novels, build plots, populate whole worlds with complex and interesting people and--
Me: super cool. oh um what’s the password for our email??
Brain: our what now
why taking time off as a writer is hard
- sometimes you can't afford to lose time and stop
- it's also very hard to not...think
- what do you THINK ABOUT if you're not plotting stories?!??!
- the best ideas come, of course, when you decide to not write
- ah thanks for that, brain
if someone dares tell you that you don't deserve to exist, WRITE YOUR MAGIC and pain and passion into incredible novels and then build a book throne with them and sit on it, eat a cake, and prosper.
this world is made better by the existence of trans and nonbinary people.
writers, at the beginning of a new year
- making goals to write more!
- pledging to stop procrastinating (a cute lie!!)
- says will drink less coffee this year (now sipping blood of angry men)
- bought a new journal to never use
- there was a sale, stationery is an addiction ok
i hope 2020 is the year you write the book you're insufferably in love with, the book that intimidates you, the book that you've always needed. go fight for your words and for your characters and if anyone dismisses your dreams, juST EAT THEM. THAT'LL SOLVE IT.
writing is...
• opening your laptop and then closing it again
• typing with one hand because you're also eating a snack
• being ferociously in love with your story bUT ALSO terrified you do not have the skills to do it justice
reasons writers wear headphones
- listening to epic and inspiring music while writing
- listening to ambient calming rain
- just blocking out general sound like traffic or people or that screaming in the background
- who is that carrying on??
- oh! oh [laughs softly] it's me
tropes we deserve
- enemies to lovers
- "theRe'S oNLy one bED"
- when the sweet character just SNAPS
- kissing in action scene to distract everyone and not get caught
- giving the gruff character a nickname
- yelling will NEVER do a thing...next scene, they are doing the thing
writers have so many incredibly magical talents!!! but one we're particularly good at is thinking we are very very good at writing and also very very bad at writing. at the same time.
where writers get inspiration
- while in the shower
- absorbing other art, books, music, films
- anytime you have NOTHING TO WRITE ON
- it walks up and wallops you in the stomach and says "write this"
- if you scream into the void enough it gets sick of you and offers book ideas
reasons it's difficult to write books
- you aren't supposed to use ?! even though it's an everyday emotion
- no emojis either apparently
- writing food scenes makes you hungry
- imagining actions scenes is more fun than writing them
- you have to actually, you know, write
look. the reason you see writers complain about writing instead of proudly say it's going well is because words are fickle creatures and the moment we say they're behaving, they will sTOP out of SPITE and bite you.
listen up writers, remember to...
- BACK UP YOUR WORK
- take time off writing
- refill the creative well too, watch TV, read, listen to music
- swap critique with trusted writing friends (you learn so much)
- and STOP summoning demons!!! i see you procrastinating there!!
"eh I'll figure it out later"
-- direct quote from writers as they shrug and skip over the mess they've just written to get to a fun part while future-them who'll have to edit this just screams nonstop for twelve years
writing is very hard 🥺 but do you know what's even harder? NOT WRITING. Once you start, it's impossible to get away. Stories follow you around, whining pitifully until you pay attention to them. "I quit," you say and two days later...a story is just there. sHOUTING at you!!!
Me: [gets in the shower]
Me: [is inspired for 23 novels, fixes plot holes, composes award acceptance speech, is strengthened to pour passion and heart into every chapter]
Me: [leaves shower]
Me: [brain returns to being an amorphous blob]
