The official peak audience is in.
Our prediction was 24.5m.
Whether we landed it or missed it, the bigger point remains: appointment viewing is not dead. It just needs stakes, timing and shared emotion. That is the challenge for cinema - especially independent cinema.

After England v Norway on ITV, what do we think the UK peak audience for England v Argentina on BBC One will be?
Under 20m
20m-22.5m
22.5m-25m
25m+
Our prediction: 24.5m peak.
Whatever happens, it will be another reminder that when the story, stakes and timing align, audiences still show up together.
That is the lesson for cinema.

If England v Argentina was an independent film release, no one would be asking whether audiences still go out for stories.
They would be asking:
What is the hook?
Who is the audience?
Why now?
Where is the event?
How do we make people feel they must be there?
That is theatrical distribution in five questions.

This weekend’s free-to-air sport has felt like a reminder of something we may have lost. The World Cup. Wimbledon. Silverstone. Sandown. Rugby.
Across BBC, ITV and Channel 4, sport is once again doing what it did so well for generations: creating occasions that people can stumble into, discuss and experience together.
It takes us back to the era of Big Daddy on a Saturday afternoon.
You did not need to be a wrestling devotee. You simply knew it was on. It entered the household, the playground and the wider conversation. That was appointment viewing.
Not everything was personalised. Not everything arrived through an algorithm. Some moments belonged to everyone at once. There is a lesson there for cinema.
The films that truly cut through are rarely just released. They become occasions: shared experiences with a reason to leave home, bring someone along and feel part of a wider conversation.
Sport still understands the value of making audiences feel that something is happening now. Cinema can do the same.
Not every film needs the same strategy. But more films deserve a moment that feels bigger than a listing, a trailer and an algorithm.

Classification is not an administrative afterthought. It affects release dates, cinema bookings, marketing materials, audience guidance and the overall P&A timetable. Producers should budget and schedule for it from the outset.
Today we publish our Annual Report, marking a year of significant strategic progress:
🎬 Highest no. of films classified in our 113-year history
🤖 Deployment of bespoke AI tool to support our Compliance Officers

Netflix’s decision to give Greta Gerwig’s Narnia a global theatrical launch, with Sony handling international distribution, is a reminder of something the industry too often forgets.
Before a film can live long in the home, it must first be given a moment in the world. Cinema is where audiences gather. Where reviews, conversation and word of mouth take root. Where a title becomes more than content - it becomes an occasion.
Streaming may extend the harvest, but theatrical can prepare the ground.
At BUFF Studios, we believe the right release is not about scale for its own sake. It is about placing a film before the right audience, in the right rooms, at the right time, so that every window that follows carries greater value. Not theatrical versus streaming.
Cinema first where it gives a film the chance to endure.
