#FunFact: The iconic Blaxploitation film "The Mack" was inspired by and based on the life of Oakland Pimp Frank Ward. The Ward Brothers (Fred, Ted, Andrew, and Willie) served as technical advisors and extras. The cars, clothes, and jewelry used in the film were all provided by the Ward brothers. The movie was filmed in an Oakland neighborhood that was already facing tension between the underworld of Pimps and drug dealers and the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party showed up to the set and threw bottles and rocks at the crew. Forcing the director and producers to pay the Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seals led Panthers, for permission to film in the neighborhood. In October of 1972, a few months into filming the Mack, Frank Ward was sitting in his Rolls Royce with a woman named Blanche Bernard when a gunman approached and shot them both execution style. The film's director, Michael Campos, moved the movie from Oakland to Los Angeles to finish filming out of fear. When the Mack made its premiere in 1973 at the Roxie Theater, Huey P. Newton INSISTED that the proceeds from the premiere be donated to the Black Panther Party's Free Breakfast For Children program. Campos obliged Newton's request. Frank Ward's murder has never been solved.
