It has been confirmed that a power outage is currently affecting several Rand Water pump stations, resulting in many directly supplied areas already running dry.

This development is particularly concerning as it comes one day before the planned Rand Water maintenance scheduled for 17 July 2026.

The loss of pumping capacity today may reduce reservoir levels before the planned maintenance even begins, increasing the likelihood of extended low water pressure or no water in downstream systems.

Ward 134 is supplied via reservoirs including Boschkop, Honeydew, Randpark Ridge, Olivedale and Cosmo City, and these systems may take longer to recover if reservoir levels are significantly depleted before tomorrow's maintenance.

I am engaging Joburg Water for further information on the extent of the outage and any contingency measures being implemented. I will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available.

*REMINDER:* Rand Water's planned maintenance will commence tomorrow, *17 July 2026, and is scheduled to last 12 hours.*

During this period, the Eikenhof System is expected to operate at approximately 50% pumping capacity, which will reduce the volume of water supplied into Joburg Water's network.

This is expected to place pressure on several reservoirs supplying our area, including:

▫️Boschkop Reservoir
▫️Honeydew Reservoir
▫️Randpark Ridge Reservoir
▫️Olivedale Reservoir
▫️Cosmo City Reservoir

As a result, residents in Ward 134 may experience low water pressure or intermittent water outages, particularly in higher-lying areas and during peak demand periods.

Of concern, some areas directly supplied by Rand Water have already reported running dry this morning, ahead of the planned maintenance. This raises concerns that the impact on downstream systems, including Ward 134, could be more severe than initially anticipated.

Residents are encouraged to store sufficient water for essential household use today and this weekend.

I will continue engaging Joburg Water and provide updates as more information becomes available.

City Power has advised that the cause of the outage was illegal electricity connections on the network.

The illegal connections have not yet been removed. City Power has indicated that a dedicated operation will be planned to disconnect the illegal connections in order to improve the reliability and stability of the electricity supply.

I am currently at the Joburg Water depot seeking answers about the ongoing low water pressure and intermittent no-water supply affecting parts of Northriding AH, Sundowner, Northgate, Randpark Ridge and Boskruin.

Management was in a meeting, but I managed to speak to them briefly. They confirmed that the cause is still under investigation.

Joburg Water teams will be working from the reservoir supply points and tracing their way down the network during the day to identify the problem particularly because the low-pressure and no-water issues appear to be occurring mainly during daytime hours.

I know residents are frustrated. I will continue pushing Joburg Water for clear answers, a confirmed cause and a lasting solution.

I will share further updates as soon as I receive them.

City Power has advised that power supply from the Bernie Street Switching Station has now been restored.

However, RMU 869 remains off, affecting parts of Boundary Park, Northriding AH and surrounding areas.

City Power has advised that the Olievenhout 16 11kV Switching Station incomer has tripped on an earth fault, causing an unplanned power outage affecting customers in Northwold, Northriding AH, Northriding, Sharonlea and surrounding areas.

City Power operators are currently on site working to restore power supply to affected customers.

This outage comes against the backdrop of a wider crisis in the City of Johannesburg. Last week, Thuso House and other revenue centres were forced to close after the Sheriff removed furniture, reportedly linked to the City’s failure to pay service providers.

When a City fails to pay suppliers and contractors, residents ultimately suffer through disrupted services and a municipality increasingly unable to perform its most basic functions.
