In less than 9 months of this year the Irish embassy in New Delhi issued 31,247 visas to Indian people.

An approval rate 85.6%.

In 2026, more Indians will move to Ireland than the total number of babies born to Irish mothers.

Did you know the Govt passed a new Social Housing law this summer ?

“The Housing and Residential Tenancies Act 2026”

This Act sets the rules for asylum seekers’ access to social housing

To qualify for social housing you must be “lawfully resident” and “habitually resident” in Ireland.

“lawfully resident” includes:

• Refugee status
• Subsidiary protection
• Permission to remain
• Programme refugee status
• Certain qualifying family permissions

So once someone moves from being an asylum applicant, they have an immediate legal gateway to the social housing list.

Social housing is NOT for citizens only.

And To be clear:

Until this summer, the rules governing migrants’ access to social housing were largely contained in a Departmental circular from 2012.

The Govt has now written them directly into law.

This was a chance to tighten up access to social benefits.

Remember the Govt admit most are “economic migrants”

But Instead they have doubled down.

This directly affects the housing crisis.

It puts new arrivals in direct competition with with disability campaigners & others for housing resources.

Arabic-speaking men are attacking women in Galway.

Two are currently in court charged with the gang rape and false imprisonment of a woman.

Separately, a man who claimed asylum in Ireland in 2024 is charged with assaulting a woman and locking her in a bedroom for 14 hours.

I was on Newstalk this morning discussing something that's been on my mind for a while: why does Ireland ask so little of people applying for citizenship, when almost every other country in Europe asks for more?

Spain requires a language exam and a civics test with a 60% pass mark. Germany requires B1 language plus a 33-question test on German society and law. France introduced a mandatory civic exam this year, alongside a B2 language requirement for naturalisation.

Ireland asks for neither.

This conversation has been prompted by the Bouchaker case, and I want to be careful here: I'm not saying that case proves language causes crime, and the Taoiseach was right to make that point. But it does show up a wider gap in our system, one where someone can gain citizenship without ever demonstrating a working knowledge of the language or the civic life of this country.

That's not about being harsh. It's about bringing Ireland's rules in line with what the rest of Europe already does. Have a listen to the interview and let me know what you think.
