Update: Tropical Storm #Jerry formed this morning in the central Atlantic and is forecast to become our fifth hurricane of the season.
Jerry should stay well east of the mainland United States, guided by strong high pressure that keeps it on a northwest track before turning it north over the open Atlantic. The Lesser Antilles and Bermuda could see some impacts later this week/weekend and should monitor this storm’s progress.
We now have just under eight weeks remaining in our hurricane season.
We are currently monitoring Category 5 Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Depression Nine (soon to become Imelda).
Most weather models no longer show Tropical Depression Nine making landfall, though it remains a possibility. The continuing concern is beach erosion and heavy rainfall, which could trigger flash, urban, and river flooding from Georgia into the Carolinas and southern Mid-Atlantic. This is a tricky forecast with small changes in storm speed and strength bringing big changes in impacts. Tomorrow should bring more clarity on what these states can expect early next week.
While the storm’s center is expected to stay offshore of Florida, tropical storm conditions are still possible along parts of the east coast, where tropical storm watches have already been issued. No significant impacts are expected for Tampa Bay or Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Humberto is already a Category 5 hurricane with winds up to 160 mph. It will remain well offshore and away from the United States, but its track adds to the complexity of the other storm’s forecast.
Stay weather aware along the Southeast coast and check back for updates as the forecast becomes clearer.
