The man who invented the operation that saves babies born with blue-baby syndrome had no medical degree, no college degree, and was listed on the payroll as a JANITOR.
He guided the first operation from a stool behind the surgeon's shoulder, telling him where to cut.
Vivien Thomas. He had been saving to study medicine when the 1929 crash wiped out his savings and the bank holding them.
He took a job as a lab assistant at Vanderbilt for a janitor's wage, because that was the classification available.
Within a couple of years he was running experimental surgery — developing techniques, performing operations on his own, training surgeons.
He moved to Johns Hopkins with Alfred Blalock in 1941, where he was still paid as a janitor and had to enter through a back door.
He was the only Black man in that building not carrying a mop.
He worked out the surgical fix for tetralogy of Fallot — the condition killing infants who turned blue and died — and built the instruments for it.
The first operation on a child was in 1944. Blalock, who had never done the procedure, asked Thomas to stand behind him and talk him through it.
The surgeons on the paper became world famous. Thomas was not credited.
Hopkins hung his portrait in 1971 and gave him an honorary doctorate in 1976. Generations of surgeons he personally trained insisted on it.
He was paid as a cleaner while inventing heart surgery.
I need to know how many of you were the kid who read absolutely everything.
Cereal boxes. Shampoo bottles. The phone book.
I did not require plot. I required words.
God is saying to you: I am restoring the years, energy, peace, and joy that felt stolen, delayed, or wasted. You have not fallen behind, and your story is not over. I am preparing you for a powerful new elevation in the season ahead. What the enemy meant for harm, I am turning around for your good. Get ready for a beautiful new season of purpose, peace, restoration, and passion. I am bringing renewed strength to your heart, fresh vision to your mind, and hope to the places where you once felt discouraged. The doors that seemed closed are not the end of your journey.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we come to You this Monday morning with hearts full of gratitude for all You have done this week. Thank You that You are our ever-present help in time of need. Thank You for the assurance in Your Word that when we call, You hear and answer. Help us hear You speak to our hearts through song and preaching, and understand the message You want to convey. We rely on You. Whatever we face today, You are the loving God who keeps us on the right path. May the Holy Spirit increase our faith and give us divine guidance as He leads us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Can we stop talking about Raven Symone and give Kyla Pratt the flowers she deserves? This girl carried a generation on her back with Proud Family, Dr. Doolittle, One on One, love, basketball, Fat Albert. Come on.🖤
The homeowner saw on the security camera that a bear was playing on the outdoor swing every day, but couldn’t get on. So he had a bigger swing built, and this was the result.
God, sharpen my discernment without hardening my heart. Help me recognize good fruit, notice unhealthy patterns, establish wise boundaries, and remain loving without becoming naive.
Nobody tells you when you’re a kid that one random Sunday at Grandma’s house will eventually be the last time everyone is there at the same time.
The cousins are running in and out of the house.
Somebody’s yelling, “STOP SLAMMING THAT DOOR!”
The adults are sitting around the kitchen table talking about things you couldn’t care less about.
There’s food everywhere.
Someone is asleep in a recliner.
You can hear the TV from the other room.
You’re bored half the time and begging to go home.
And you have absolutely no idea that you are standing inside a memory you will spend the rest of your life wishing you could walk back into.
Then everybody grows up.
The cousins move away.
People get married.
Families get busy.
Grandparents get older.
The house gets sold.
Some people stop speaking.
Some people are no longer here.
And suddenly you’d give just about anything to sit at that kitchen table for ten more minutes and hear everybody’s voices coming from different rooms.
The older I get, the more I realize…
We weren’t “just going to Grandma’s house.”
We were going to the one place where our entire family still belonged to each other.
And somehow none of us realized it was temporary.
If you had a house like that growing up, you were richer than you knew. 🤍
Let’s pray:
Heavenly Father, as we come to You this Tuesday morning, we give You glory, honor, and praise. You are the God of all power who laid the earth’s foundations and whose hands made the heavens the one and only Almighty God. Blessed to begin another week, we do not know what it will bring, but we know what You have prepared is always good. Show us favor in all we do and keep us safe on the path You have laid. Make this week productive and bless all who read this with Your divine favor and peace as the Holy Spirit leads. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
