Hot take but “stanning” culture should be classified as mental illness instead of being glorified and normalized like it is.
This all-too-common hyper-obsessive behaviour can’t be healthy for both to the individual and the person they’re one-sidedly worshipping. Of course the first argument against anyone that ever talks about this is, “let people enjoy things” but this goes so far beyond just simply enjoying things. It’s an obsession.
The waves of “stan” profile pictures and accounts who are online 24/7 posting about the same thing, bullying and harrassing anyone who doesn’t stan the thing they do to the extent they do. The fanatical parasocial delusions and relentless cyber-stalking; sometimes even real stalking in extreme cases. The constant speaking on behalf of a person who doesn’t even know they exist. The hours upon hours of queuing and camping in lines with complete disregard for anyone else around them. Spending exorbitant amounts of money on multiple versions of the same albums/items. Sleep streaming 24/7 to artificially boost numbers. The list goes on and on.
These people worship these celebrities more than they do their own loved ones and it’s just sad. I’m positive this kind of thing existed before the internet, but I’d be hard-pressed to believe it hasn’t increased twentyfold since then, and needs to be scrutinized more in-depth by people obviously much more educated/specialized than I am.
Being a “stan” is not something that one should be proud of, and the fact so many people are is alarming and depressing to say the least.
