This applies to goaltenders as well. An entire presentation in Sweden at the IIHF symposium (goalie track) by David Alexander focused on using deception in the trapezoid to create affordances for emerging passing lanes and alleviating pressure on D.

Deception w/ your feet is incredibly valuable on puck retrievals when used appropriately - small fakes, weight shifts, & edgework can freeze forecheckers, create time/space, & manipulate pressure. Smart footwork disguises intentions & opens options for clean exits under pressure
