Recontextualizing Batman’s origin, with the arrival of Superman shows that these are the two moments in his life where he was completely powerless.

With Superman’s arrival, Batman is returned to the original source of his being. The people’s fear of the Superman, himself included, aligns perfectly with what he experienced on the night of his parents death.

With Superman’s arrival, he must regain all the power he amassed to become Batman in the first place. However, he is still that powerful so in order to gain enough power to match the Superman, he must go beyond that. He must go beyond his own imposed restrictions, in order to gain enough power to defeat a force that has the ability to create the conditions of his origin on a cataclysmic scale.

In this process, Batman loses himself by going too deep into the abyss.

He becomes the same unstoppable force that Joe Chill was to him only to find a boy begging for the life of his mother, Martha.

I saw someone post about how in BVS, that Batman seeks to kill Superman because of his potential for destruction, but that Batman has no high ground to stand on because of his own actions.

Batman does have the high ground because he has the monopoly of defense.

His entire mission is meant to defend against another catastrophe like what happened in Metropolis.

This is why the referential material of the 1% scene is so important.

Those who were tasked with defending against another catastrophe, such as 9/11 would not be able to react quickly enough if they had to follow the imposed restrictions of due process.

The potential lives at stake outweighed the potential negative effects of your own actions trying to prevent that.

The cost is to great to be cautious.

If Batman had to blow up a couple international mercenaries to get his hands on the kryptonite, then it had to be done.

Superman’s potential for destruction was far greater.

Batman believed that he had to take any action necessary in order to save the world from Superman.

However, this is a slippery slope that almost always results in the defending party, trampling over the rights and freedoms of citizens, under the guise of protection.

It’s the classic mistake of trading freedom for security.

In order for the government to track down terrorists after 9/11 they had to build a machine capable of doing that, but they couldn’t build that machine without it also working on American citizens, but they deemed it too necessary for national security for it matter.

In order to save the world from Superman, Batman needed the kryptonite. The lives of a private militia were deemed inconsequential for the greater good, as Batman’s deranged defensive doctrine declared.

This is a difficult razor’s edge to walk.

You can fly too close to the sun, breaching freedoms and imposing tyrannical rule over the people of America or Gotham.

Or you can fly too close to the sea, and allow another catastrophe to happen on your watch.

It’s the difference between preventative and defensive violence.
