The Chinese Embassy in Uganda hosted a grand reception at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel to mark the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Speaker Oboth also directed MoFED to initiate an amendment bill to harmonise the legal framework and create a SACCO-specific regime. He further guided that the previously constituted taskforce be reinstated to follow up on the agreed roadmap.

Parliament yesterday announced plans to re-establish the Institute of Parliamentary Studies, five years after it was formally closed following the repeal of its founding law.

Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth said the revived institute would lead Parliament’s training, research and capacity-building work.

Germany would provide technical support under a planned agreement between the two legislatures.

The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Marksons Oboth, has pledged his support for efforts to expand female student housing at Makerere University.

Speaker Oboth made the commitment during a courtesy visit to Parliament by the Makerere University Guild leadership, led by Guild Speaker Mutatiina Travis Muhwezi and Deputy Guild Speaker Evas Akello.

The student leaders used the meeting to raise a number of pressing policy and welfare concerns affecting the student body, chief among them the shortage of accommodation for female students.

In his response, Oboth commended the guild leadership for raising the matter directly with Parliament and assured them that the House will expeditiously approve any funding request for female hostels.

Parliament is hosting the 2026 National Youth Symposium on the theme; Building Bridges, Shaping the Future: Youth Leadership for National Healing, Accountability and Inclusive Democracy.

The event launched by the Minister for @Mglsd_UG, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, has brought together over 300 youths from different fora across the country to learn and participate in building Uganda's future.

During the Symposium, led by @NimdUganda; the National Youth Legislative Agenda (2026 - 2031) will also be launched.

Businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba has told COSASE that he is seeking compensation from Government over the cancellation of his company’s deal to redevelop Kampala’s 2.5-acre City Square.

Basajjabalaba said his company won the tender in 2001 and paid Shs1.635bn to the then Kampala City Council (KCC) as a premium.

He said the proposed redevelopment would have preserved the green space on top of the square, with commercial activities developed below.

He told the committee that the arrangement provided for a five-year lease from 2002, with provision for a further 49 years.

Mr Basajjabalaba said the deal was subsequently halted, forming part of his wider compensation claims against Government over cancelled market and property arrangements.

He says he too was shocked to see the Presidents letter asking for a study on the proposal to develope city square land.

He says as for now he is waiting to see if one property will be given to two people.

Committee Chairperson Hon Muwada Nkunyingi questioned the circumstances under which Mr Basajjabalaba acquired interests in the land.

Mr Basajjabalaba, however, vowed to challenge any decision to give the land to another developer.

Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth yesterday announced plans to revive the Institute of Parliamentary Studies, which was formally closed in 2021.

“Through cooperation with the German Parliament, we will learn and unlearn, adopt best practices and strengthen parliamentary diplomacy,” Oboth said.

A planned agreement would support expert training, study visits and exchanges between the two legislatures.
