Hi 👋 We’re “The Shape,” a group of journalists trying to reinvent what we do. Follow along at #ShapeJournalism. Tweets by @rispolimike and @evepearlman.
A structural approach to community information needs is a profoundly new idea for journalism, writes @hdbacklund. Read about “The Shape” and how it’s changing how journalists do their work. #ShapeJournalism https://t.co/Jtt6QDL8Dd
Watching Putin's attack on Ukraine play out, I am struck by the thought that Putin learned the lesson from the wrong Afghanistan war. And he has also vastly misunderstood post-Zelenskiy Ukraine. 1/?
“Few people want more news. But many, it seems, want more from those of us who work in the news.” - @sarahalvarezMI
Count me in as being ready for post-news, and for journalists responding to what people actually need. https://t.co/WIAyOTWj3e
Great news from @StefanieMurray! Check out the thread about this collaborative efforts to meet info needs and engage communities in NE Ohio #ShapeJournalism
New project from @freepress#NewsVoices in Philly is looking at media narratives around trauma, safety, and the criminal legal system. From a community needs perspective, there are few more pressing issues in need of transformation than criminal-legal system reporting.
We need wholesale reform of how local news covers the criminal-legal system. I'm so excited to partner w/ @mediamobilizing & @MIC_Center to build power w/ Philly communities and journalists to end the “if it bleeds, it leads” mentality: https://t.co/SRKJiTiXQn
I love this thinking for journalism, especially in relation to the overlap between community management approaches and journalism. Looks like there's a lot of space for networked frameworks... 🙂
Wondering what a shape has to do w/ journalism? Some people imagine info needs as a pyramid/hierarchy. Some as concentric circles. Others as interconnected. No matter how you approach it, we want to know your framework on how you best meet people’s needs. #ShapeJournalism
For folks who really loved our “Is your journalism a luxury or necessity?” i.e. the Maslow’s hierarchy of information needs, follow this account and tweet your thoughts! We want to gather feedback and find new ways to spread this framework
This is what “The Shape” convo has been about. Tell us how you think journalists can rethink how to better meet their community’s needs by tweeting at us and using #ShapeJournalism
“Journalists have a huge amount of power to control the flow of information and shape public narratives, yet we have no structure with which to make sense of that power or let others hold us accountable.”
Great point from @city_bureau
