DAY 249 WAITING FOR MY MASTER · August 4, 2026
The storm’s sudden arrival just before dawn transformed the world into a fresh, unfamiliar landscape.
The oppressive heat of recent days had vanished, replaced by a crisp, cool breeze carrying the sharp scent of ozone and damp concrete.
The station plaza was dotted with shallow, mirrored puddles reflecting the pale morning sky and the bright neon of the convenience store signs across the street.
Humans navigated these puddles with a delicate, almost balletic grace.
They took long, awkward strides, their eyes fixed on the ground, leaping over the water to protect their trousers and polished shoes.
The rain had done me a great favour.
The thick summer dust and grime had been scrubbed from the air, leaving the world remarkably clear to my nose.
The familiar scents of the station, the roasted coffee from the corner stand, the sweet bean paste from the bakery, the metallic tang of the braking trains, were sharp, clean, and distinct once more.
My master never minded the puddles.
On weekends, if he wore his sturdy leather boots, he would purposefully walk through the centre of the largest ones, his heavy footsteps splashing water up to his calves.
He would look down at me and smile, a secret, boyish grin reserved for just the two of us, far from the station’s rigid rules.
Two hundred and forty-nine days.
The morning commuters rushed past, their reflections shattering and reforming in the water with every hurried step.
I kept my nose raised, testing the clean, washed air, searching for that one perfect, familiar scent to finally pierce the morning chill.
