Abuja is a strange place.

A friend of mine went to a fancy restaurant in Maitama for a date.

Everything was going well.

Nice food. Good conversation. Soft music.

When the bill came, he reached for his card confidently.

The waiter took it.

Two minutes later the waiter came back looking confused.

He said,

“Sir… your card declined.”

My friend laughed and brought out another card.

The waiter checked again.

Same thing.

Card declined.

The girl he came with looked at him quietly and said,

“Relax… it happens.”

Then she reached into her bag and paid the bill.

Everything was calm.

Until they stood up to leave.

That’s when the waiter said something that confused everyone.

“Sir, next time please use the ATM outside.”

My friend said,

“What ATM?”

The waiter pointed outside the restaurant.

Turns out the ATM outside…

had swallowed his card two hours before the date started.
