This is my last post on social media on #TheBengalFiles before I appear in two podcasts about the film, and here, I deal with the box office collections.

How the film does commercially is immaterial, and I am not in the business of promoting or boycotting films. The truth of Direct Action Day, 16 August 1946, and the two days of Hindu pogrom that followed, had to be told. It's stupid to compare its monetary returns with propaganda and PR commercials from the other side, like #AamirKhan's #PK or #ShahRukhKhan's #Jawaan.

@vivekagnihotri's work is in the genre of #SatyajitRay's #AshaniSanket on the Bengal famine, #GovindNihalani's #Dev and #RahulDholakia's #Parzania, the last two on the Gujarat riots of 2002. All of them tanked — yeah, leftist creators fail, too — but the filmmakers were expectedly and rightly unfazed.

Maybe The Bengal Files did not enjoy the backing that #TheKashmirFiles did, as it exposes the charlatan that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was. The current prime minister is a big fan of the fellow Gujarati, who banished popular leader Pragya Singh Thakur for criticising the not-so-mahaan aatma. This does not matter either.

There are a few issues with the script, narration and direction, but so had #TheKeralaStory, which I decided to stay away from after producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah accepted the Supreme Court's order to put a disclaimer on the film that his was a "work of fiction". While the film on the influence of ISIS on the southern state enchanted the Hindus who did not care what the forced disclaimer said, The Bengal Files is archive material, what you call a "collector's item". People who are too lazy to read the relevant reports by British authorities and old-school Indian historians (neither Marxist nor Sanghi) who dealt with the riots or the Britannica or Wikipedia article on the subject, and those who were brought up on sanitised and 'tolerant' education under socially irresponsible parents and teachers, but who are ready for a course correction if prodded, will watch it for the information that the social studies course curriculum in their schools suppressed.
