Today in #ComputingHistory, we celebrate #AdaLovelaceDay, an international celebration of women in STEM. Ada Lovelace Day was established in 2009 to honor her legacy and highlight the many contributions of women in STEM. It strives to inspire future generations to pursue careers in these fields.
In 1843, Ada Lovelace published what is widely regarded as the first computer program. Lovelace recognized that a machine could follow instructions to solve complex problems and predicted that computers would do far more than calculations.
Her legacy continues to inspire. #OTD https://t.co/yYxQ2pqXRz
Happy Birthday to Turing Laureate Silvio Micali! Micali received the #ACMTuringAward in 2012 along with Shafi Goldwasser, for transformative work that laid the complexity-theoretic foundations for the science of cryptography, and in the process pioneered new methods for efficient verification of mathematical proofs in complexity theory.
In this video, Micali describes the familial roots of his interest in interactive proofs and introduces his work on zero knowledge proofs: https://t.co/in0x3w7a2E
On this day in 1931, 2001 #ACMTuringAward recipient Ole-Johan Dahl was born. Ole-Johan Dahl received the ACM Turing Award with Kristen Nygaard for ideas fundamental to the emergence of object-oriented programming, through their design of the programming languages Simula I and Simula 67.
SIMULA I was intended to be used both for describing complex systems and for programming simulations of their behavior. Today, object-oriented programming is the dominant style of programming for commercial and industrial applications. 🔗 https://t.co/TLLaAbrayr #OTD
Happy Birthday to Turing Laureate Michael Stonebraker! Stonebraker received the #ACMTuringAward in 2014 for fundamental contributions to the concepts and practices underlying modern database systems.
Stonebraker describes his work with Eugene Wong and others at Berkeley to develop the original version of INGRES, one of the earliest and most influential relational database management systems: https://t.co/pyPLpXi88T
Happy Birthday to Turing Laureate Dana Stewart Scott! Scott received the 1976 #ACMTuringAward along with Michael O. Rabin, for their joint paper "Finite Automata and Their Decision Problem," which introduced the idea of nondeterministic machines, which has proved to be an enormously valuable concept. Their classic paper has been a continuous source of inspiration for subsequent work in this field.
In this video, Dana Scott explains how he came to write a thesis on infinite dimensional geometry for Alonzo Church at Princeton: https://t.co/Tka7xCV8yA

Happy Birthday to Turing Laureate John E. Hopcroft! Hopcroft received the #ACMTuringAward with Robert E. Tarjan in 1986 for fundamental achievements in the design and analysis of algorithms and data structures.
His work on formal languages and the analysis of algorithms has made John Hopcroft one of the handful of pioneering computer scientists who put the discipline on a firm theoretical foundation. Neither of his parents were high school graduates, but they instilled in him a love of learning and worked hard to ensure that he had the chance to obtain more education than either of them had.
Watch Hopcroft explain how he was hired for his first academic job, at Princeton, without having published a single paper: https://t.co/cxc9abnjV0

Happy Birthday to Turing Laureate Martin Hellman! Martin Hellman received the #ACMTuringAward in 2015 for inventing and promulgating both asymmetric public-key #cryptography, including its application to digital signatures, and a practical cryptographic key-exchange method.
In this video, Martin Hellman discusses his Ph.D. thesis work, “Learning with Finite Memory.” He explains using a trick coin as an example: https://t.co/QxRDcSdEpa
