Happy Homecoming
Long ago, I realized that longing for words of affirmation in medical training can lead to a negatively skewed view of self. This often is perpetuated by the very people who should be fostering a psychologically safe training environment.
I have value, I am extremely competent with a unique passion for improving patient/medical education, and I am an asset. Respect me as such.

I have to constantly reaffirm myself as a black man in Neonatology. This is, of course, balanced with the ability to receive and implement feedback, continuing to be a life-long learner.
This is for that girl in high school who said I “took her spot” at Emory when I decided to go to Morehouse undergrad. I WAS A BETTER APPLICANT! Affirmative action made it so they don’t OVERLOOK my application because I am black. Stop pretending like y’all don’t know that.
If you are celebrating the dismantling of affirmative action, get over yourself…you STILL won’t or wouldn’t have gotten in. Affirmative action was NOT the reason you didn’t get in 😂
