#OPINION | Cardio-metabolic diseases are presently the leading cause of death, globally and in India. The burden of such diseases will grow rapidly in India, unless multi-sector public policies and responsive health systems reduce their risk at various stages of life. An ageing population, increasing urbanisation and lifestyles that unwittingly embrace risk are propelling these diseases of maladapted modernity. These diseases are affecting all social classes and are no longer restricted to urban areas, writes K Srinath Reddy.

PHFI@20 Symposium: #20YearsofPHFI was set up with a bold vision to strengthen #publichealth education, research, and policy in India. Today, we celebrate that journey and the incredible milestones achieved through collaboration and partnerships.
Dr Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia, today addressed the inaugural session of the 2⃣-day PHFI@20 Symposium.
Lauding the work of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) over the last 20 years, she noted that it has built a remarkable legacy—leading in research 🔬, shaping the health sector 🏥, and training thousands of public health professionals 🎓. Today, its alumni are contributing across governments, international agencies, civil society, and academia worldwide.
Looking ahead, Dr Boehme emphasized the need to build institutions that endure 🏛️, bridge the gap between science and policy, and adapt public health education to a rapidly changing world 🌏.
Dr Boehme also interacted with participants 🤝🏾 and toured an exhibition by PHFI, along with its founding President, Prof Srinath Reddy.
