Vampires Kiss [1988]
Pros
Yes. Most perfect Nicholas Cage film ever made.. in 1988!
Cage turned up to 11. A Wildly unpredictable & a bold hallmark feeling movie.
Therapy.
Cons
I don’t believe in vampires, but I believe in fearing whatever Cage is in this spectacle.
Poor Alva.
7/7
Cube [1997]
PROS
Saw before Saw did Saw, just.
Inventive interesting idea executed with restraint and only a snippet of whole story.
CONS
Don’t think this is an accurate or appropriate representation of “mentally handicapped”.
I don’t understand what this movies message was.
4/7
The New Mutants [2020]
PROS
Nice nod towards the appropriately terrifying Buffy Gentlemen episode.
Magiks badass sword.
Ive watched this film and still don’t believe it came out.
CONS
3 YEARS from production to release is absolutely insane for such an average movie.
Accents.
4/7
Train to Busan presents: Peninsula [2020]
PROS
More of an action than a tension movie in the same vein of The Purge 2 was to TP1.
CONS
Visual FX are hard, i understand that, and also that you’re limited practically & there is a very good use for them, but this is PS2-like.
4/7
Secondhand Lions[2003]
PROS
A tender kids film about swindling grandparents.
Robert Duvall fucks up a bunch of greasers with his bare hands and it’s amazing.
CONS
Michael Caines confusing southern accent.
Same year Robert Duval made The 6th Day, think about that for a moment.
5/7
CONS
Having said that, i think Elizabeth Debickis most natural form is wearing a bikini skirt wrap on a yacht.
Major dialogue mixing issues in such an exposition heavy film can really scramble your eggs from an early point, if not crystal clear on what the plan is.
6/7
Tenet [2020]
PROS
Aggressively powerful score that occasionally takes centre stage in setting a bond-like tone around this high concept espionage drama.
Most villainous role for Kenneth Branagh since his directing of Artemis Fowl.
JD Washington & R Patts wardrobes performance.
Bold, loud and visually spectacular set pieces that justify the budget and showcase everything Nolan is known for: time manipulation, practical effects and even with the addition of an actually fleshed out female character with drive and motivations of her own for a change.
The Lincoln Lawyer [2011]
Pros
Oh! moments for all who pop up, John Leguizamo, Michael Pena, Marisa Tomei, William H Macy, Josh Lucas and Bryan Cranston.
Ryan Phillipe is so hateable.
Cons
Why didn’t this pair with McConaugheys Lincoln Ads, insane how it didn’t link at all.
4/7
Taxi Driver [1976]
Pros
Follows a real shithead main.
Most accommodating & polite secret service agent ever committed to film.
Zac Efron did a pretty good job at the De Niro party in Bad Neighbors.
Cons
Yeah I can see how people who love this film really hate the Joker movie.
6/7
Yes, God, Yes [2020]
Pros
A mild mannered criticism of Catholicism and it’s obsessive possessive control.
Natalie Dyer has the best shocked & naive look.
Doesn’t overstay welcome at 78m.
Cons
A teen boy that is clearly a warewolf, doesn’t factor into the story in any way.
5/7
Sputnik [2020]
Pros
One of the most impulsive main character in film history.
Russians very rarely skimp out on the military flare and visual effects.
Cons
Basically Russian language version of Life.
Comrade Semiradov really seemed like a nice bloke at first, I feel tricked.
3/7
Crank 2: High Voltage [2009]
Pros
Leans into the comedy more with a straight up anime feeling, even with a spontaneous kaiju fight.
Cons
Stopped at 2, when could’ve really taken things nuts in 3 with Chelios having to consume more to stay alive; Fire, Blood, Human Souls?
5/7
Crank [2006]
Pros
Nevdine and Taylor adapt a real life GTA game with fictional aggressive anti-hero Chev Chelios played by the only man to make this work, Jason Statham.
Cons
Wild paced and follows a crazy person in a crazy universe.
There is never a sense of realism.
4/7
Jennifers Body [2009]
Pros
Jennifer having not 1, but 2, framed selfies on her desk beside her mirror is top notch set design.
Cons
There is an entire saga of tales explaining why JK Simmons is a teacher in this movie with a burnt neck & hook hand, that is never addressed.
5/7
Unhinged [2020]
Pros
There is not a more effective antagonistic force than a sweaty enraged Jabba the Hutt with road and general life rage.
Cons
I assume all the BTS footage is just RC grunting and swearing under his breath for 30 minutes straight on a studio-made car set.
4/7
The Tax Collector [2020]
Pros
David Ayer post Suicide Squad & Bright doing a mob crime drama.
Cons
Shia got an actual chest tattoo and his bare chest has literally 1 second of screen time, in a scene you’re trying to work out if you can see his dick or not, strange decision.
3/7
Antiviral [2012]
Pros
Brandon Cronenberg follows in steps of his father with some shocking imagery in the vein of videodrome, but a mystery.
Could be a great live action joker, with the creepiness levels in this.
Cons
The cast is secondary to the true star of the film, flesh.
4/7
Elysium [2013]
Pros
Neill Blomkamps dystopian space epic that’s basically a crank film as Max, on the brink of death receives an Iron Man-like exoskeleton.
Blomkamp enables Sharlto Copley.
Cons
Jodie Forsters borderline offensive british-face level impression of David Bowie.
4/7
Oblivion [2013]
Pros
Aggressive sound design and score, with occasionally stunning visuals when it remembers what IP its playing with.
Would make a great game.
Cons
If only this movie synced up to a Carpenter Brut album.
Someone gets accidentally shot in a scuffle cliche.
5/7
From Paris with Love [2010]
Pros
John Travolta is the star of this movie, enough that a meme was wrightfully created from a crazy dinner scene escalation in this.
Cons
Johnathan Rhys Meyers is basically a scared gullible mannequin in this.
Logistics of a giant jar of cocaine.
4/7
