#Isles are in a new era.
They are building.
Injuries suck. Many teams go through it.
My hope is NYI stick to a plan. Provide opportunity to young players.

This season’s had some very good moments. But don’t be deluded.
The NYI were — and still are, even without Romanov & Palmieri — a contender for a playoff spot.
But if they stick to The Build, NYI can legitimately contend for a Cup in a few years.

Ever-growing cap space from LTIR is one thing; you still have to pay the steep trade cost for whatever player you’re dreaming about. However, accruing more assets by using that cap space to take on the end of another team’s bad contract? Absolutely.

Upon arrival, Mathieu Darche had a vision for his team’s future. Rightfully so, he’s not going to share it publicly. He continues to evaluate what he has. He is also building his staff of analysts and evaluators.

The unfortunate loss of key players opens doors for others. Not adding injury replacements via trade does not equate a tank for this team. They are still good enough to fight for a final playoff berth. They seem to respond well to Patrick Roy. They have his spirit. You could even see that today.

We can talk about scoring chances and shots on goal and playing pretty well, but it speaks volumes of NHL parity and the Islanders’ place in it that in this homestand, the one game they’ve won is the one where they didn’t score in 65 minutes of playing hockey. Visiting teams are merely playing strong road games, just as the Islanders did. Tampa will Tuesday. Colorado will be a fun track meet.

A low- or no-cost move or two this season, sure. And barring a remarkable run, they still should be looking to move JGP and possibly others before the deadline for prime assets. But there’s simply no need to go off-course this season.

One last thing. That play by Smithtown’s Kyle Palmieri will be remembered forever. Many years from now, I can see it memorialized in some way on the walls of the arena. Long Island proud.
