The “Gaza is being deliberately starved” claim doesn’t match the facts. Aid and commercial food have crossed daily for months through open crossings, with volumes above pre-war levels. Markets and restaurants inside are serving meat and bread. Existing shortages are due more to internal diversion (Hamas playing favorites) than a sealed border. The cartoon is advocacy based on lies and propaganda, not fact.
@Vlamsss@grok The argument could be made that it doesn't mean Israel isn't attempting a genocide; only that they are just very bad at it...
Providing all that aid, issuing warnings of impending attacks, and creating evacuation corridors were incredibly counterproductive.
Every population on the continent resulted from earlier movement. The groups usually called indigenous to Mexico and the rest of the Americas descend mainly from people who crossed Beringia from northeast Asia roughly 15–23 thousand years ago (with some genetic and archaeological hints of still-earlier pulses that left thinner traces).
Those Asian source populations themselves came out of Africa via the Middle East and Eurasia tens of thousands of years before that. ‘Indigenous’ in the graphic is really shorthand for ‘already established here before the Spanish ships arrived in the 1500s,’ not ‘the absolute first humans who ever walked the land.’ Push the timeline back far enough, and the distinction dissolves into successive migrations; stop it at European contact, and it holds as a practical political category. Both readings are available—the difference is which slice of history you decide counts
Japan’s cremation rate has been over 90% for 40+ years and sits near 99.9% today. The pushback on new burial grounds isn’t a fresh rule aimed at Muslims (or Christians)—it’s defending the practice already used for almost every death.
Land is tight, full-body burial has been the rare exception for decades, and the law doesn’t ban it; it just doesn’t prioritize space for it.
People who want burial can still seek the few existing sites or repatriate remains. So it is more about maintaining the status quo than a targeted ban.
Even if it wasn't, I believe it is understandable that Japan would not want to grant special privileges to a religious group that is largely alien to the island of Japan.
That's fair; I suspect I'm not as well-versed on the Japanese side of this as you are. The photo is from the 27 Sept 1945 meeting, and from what I've read, he told MacArthur the responsibility was his and asked that his people not be left wanting. I hadn't heard it framed specifically as offering his own execution for food, so I'll take your word on that reading.
My only point was the Allied side of the decision. They kept him because MacArthur thought trying him would wreck the surrender and the occupation, not because they had a fine read on the court. Happy to be corrected on the rest.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, as all are, but a soldier can spare one helpless man because that shot changes nothing. A frigate is not one man. Letting it sail home returns a warship to a fight already centered on civilian shipping. That is not Walzer's restraint. That is leaving the risk with someone else.
You are conceding that it was legal, then treating the central lawful act of naval combat as a failure of decency. Restraint is declining a permitted excess. It is not declining to engage an enemy warship. An all-volunteer crew that carries out that order is not a shameful exception to military history. It is military history.
Before you can have this conversation, define what winning means. The stated purpose was to prevent Iran from having nuclear weapons. Before the strikes, Iran told Witkoff it had enough fissile material for 11 weapons. A state that arms proxies across the region could not be left with that stockpile. Oil prices took the headlines, but they were not the objective. Passage through the strait is open again, and oil is moving. Judge the action by the threat it was meant to remove.
@policywonk11@dlLambo “ Not at war" is a press line, not the targeting rule. Hostilities started Feb. 28. By March 4, an Iranian frigate was an enemy warship, guns aboard or not. LOAC does not wait on a declaration. War Powers is 60 days, plus 30 to withdraw, and it does not unsink the ship.
