UPDATE: License Plate Readers Detected Vehicle Involved in Serial Shoplifting, Two Arrested After Pursuit and Running

On Saturday, February 24, at about 10:21am, Turlock Police responded to an area check at W. Monte Vista Avenue and Countryside Drive.

Officers had received information that a vehicle was in the area of Monte Vista Crossings, per license plate readers. The vehicle had been involved in several recent shoplifting incidents.

Officers located the vehicle parked and unoccupied in front of Kohl’s.

Officers surveilled the vehicle until Joshua Durand, 27, of Modesto, and Stevi Earl, 33, of Modesto, returned to it. Durand got in the driver seat while Earl got in the passenger seat.

After observing Durand violate the California Vehicle Code, Officers made a traffic stop at Countryside Drive and Retreat Drive.

Durand reentered the parking lot and briefly stopped, but then recklessly took off northbound through the parking lot. A pursuit was then initiated.

The pursuit went westbound in the eastbound lanes of Monte Vista Avenue and got onto southbound Highway 99, reaching speeds in excess of 85mph.

Durand exited westbound onto W. Main Street, went southbound on S. Walnut Road, and pulled into Motel 6.

Officers had gotten a distance away from the vehicle and by the time they arrived at Motel 6, both Durand and Earl had leg-bailed from it.

A witness told Officers that the two had entered Hot Rod Diner and were hiding in the restroom. They were located and taken into custody.

While in custody, Durand claimed he was having a seizure and AMR checked him out, but appeared to be ok and was left in the Police vehicle.

Also, an Officer was treated on scene by AMR for a hand injury.

Officers identified the two and discovered that Durand had a $20,000 felony bench warrant out of San Francisco for buying or receiving a stolen vehicle, possession of methamphetamines, and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Earl had two no-bail felony bench warrants out of Modesto for auto theft and buying or receiving a stolen vehicle. Both were also on searchable probation, Durand for identity theft and Earl for auto theft and buying or receiving a stolen vehicle.

Durand and Earl were both arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of violation of probation and their warrants. Durand was also charged with fleeing from a peace officer by vehicle with disregard for public safety, fleeing from a peace officer by vehicle against traffic, and reckless driving, while Earl was also charged with obstructing or resisting a public officer in the discharge of their duty.

Additionally, Durand’s vehicle was towed.

MISSING: Three Girls Run Away From Cunningham Elementary Together

Turlock Police are currently looking for three girls who ran away together from Cunningham Elementary School at about 2:30pm.

The first is 10 years old, 5’ 7” tall, weighs 200lbs, and has hazel eyes with short brown hair. She was last seen wearing a bright red t-shirt and blue jeans.

The second is 9 years old, 4’ 8” tall, weighs 60lbs, and has hazel eyes with short light-brown hair. She was last seen wearing a purple sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The third is 11 years old, 4’ 8” tall, weighs 60lbs, and has hazel eyes with short medium-brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, orange shirt, and charcoal leggings.

All have unknown destinations, one resides in the 300 block of Lane Street while the others reside at Avena Bella Apartments in the 500 block of W. Linwood Avenue.

If seen, immediately call Officer Manuel Ayala at 209-668-1200.

17 Alleged Child Predators Arrested After Online Chat Operation

On Friday and Saturday evenings, January 5-6, Turlock Police conducted an online chat operation in the city of Turlock.

The mission of the operation was to catch predators who were seeking to meet with underaged children for the purpose of sexual activity.

This complex operation involved the coordinated effort of multiple agencies and specialized units.

With the support of the Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office Special Victims Unit, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit, and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Adult Parole Operations, officials were able to arrest 17 individuals on several felony sex-related charges successfully.

12 of the arrestees were local, while the remaining five were out-of-county residents, traveling from as far as Sacramento County.

All individuals were booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, with a majority being held on a $500,000 bail.

This independent investigation was not related to any recent arrests or investigations.

"This operation was the culmination of months of planning by the Turlock Police Department and cooperating agencies," said Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden. "I am proud of Detective Gina Giovacchini and our team for their efforts to intercept those looking to harm children in our community."

"Thank you to our partnering agencies who took part in this operation," said Detective Giovacchini. "Without their collaborative efforts, this operation wouldn't have been nearly as successful as it was. Their assistance helped keep our youth safe. Keeping our children safe from predators will continue to be my number one priority."

Traffic Advisory: Motorcyclist Down on Fulkerth in Front of Dust Bowl, Road Closed

At about 7:58pm, Mountain View Fire came upon a motorcyclist down in front of Dust Bowl Brewing Co., located at 3000 Fulkerth Road.

Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and American Medical Response were dispatched.

Firefighters are currently treating the motorcyclist, waiting for AMR.

Avoid the area if possible, both directions of Fulkerth Road are closed between N. Tegner Road and Dianne Drive.

State Route 89 (Monitor Pass) has closed ahead of the incoming snowstorm. There is no estimated time of reopening. Crews will assess the road for reopening after the storm passes.

Homeless/Transients Fire in Park Has Firefighters Respond, AGAIN! AND Police Officers!

After Turlock Fire responded to a call for a camp fire and confirmed it was a “cooking fire” that Firefighters had the people extinguish, the same people started the fire again and set up a tent in Denair Park.

Firefighters responded AGAIN and called it a “warming fire” and had it extinguished AGAIN. And this time, Police responded as well.

In the calls and videos these fires are being called “cooking fires” and/or “warming fires,” however, people can’t just start fires on the grass or in the grass areas of parks… unless apparently you’re homeless or transient (not staying in expensive homeless shelters or the emergency beds the City is paying for)‼️😡

What the City Manager, Mayor, and Councilmembers don’t seem to be factoring in or care about when they fund more and more homeless services and bring more and more homeless/transients and criminals to Turlock when they provide beds and services for the entire REGION is that there are more negative impacts during the day and when they don’t stay at the shelters or use those services.

And then Councilwoman Rebecka Monez being a homeless activist saying that Turlock should provide for all these people coming to Turlock and Mayor Amy Bublak and Councilwoman Pam Franco attacking Downtown while cutting its proposed funding to help clean up the garbage and health hazards caused by all the homeless, transients, vagrants, and outright criminals the City of Turlock is putting there, and not provided the safety needed to mitigate all the extra crime… this is hurting the rest of the 72,000 citizens, small businesses, and creating a threat to public safety.

The City Manager, Mayor, and Councilmembers are not backing or supporting the Police Officers, Firefighters, and citizens battling all these issues - they’re actually making it harder on all of us!

Traffic Advisory: Vehicle Crashed Through Garage Door on Cajun Court

At about 3:42pm, Turlock Police and Fire responded to a vehicle collision in the 3100 block of Cajun Court.

When units arrived on scene, they found that a pickup truck had crashed into the garage door of a residence.

The driver wasn’t associated with the home and had been using the home’s driveway to turn around, but ended up in the garage door instead.

No injuries were reported and a building inspector is now on scene.
