Amid the catastrophic news of the SDF’s disbanding and its forced integration into the so-called “Syrian regime,” there is something we must not allow ourselves to forget. Before our anger, grief and horror in the face of their abandonment by the world: We must say thank you.

Thank you for the sacrifices, for the extraordinary courage and for the unwavering commitment to protecting the people of Rojava and North and East Syria.

And above all, we must remember the 14,000 men and women who gave their lives, Kurds, Armenians, Assyrians, Yezidis and others, who stood together within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

They stood against ISIS when its flag of terror and extremism threatened to extinguish entire peoples, histories and futures. They fought not only for their land, but for the possibility that different peoples could live together, that women could stand at the forefront of their own liberation, and that another future for all could be imagined.

As the SDF is being dismantled, we must not allow its history to be dismantled with it too. Because institutions can be dissolved and entire armies can be absorbed, even as the last flag of the SDF is lowered forever.

But the lives they saved, the people they protected, the courage they embodied, and the sacrifices they made cannot be erased!

To every SDF fighter, every martyr, every family who carried the unbearable weight of loss, and every woman and man who stood beneath its banner:

Thank you.

Your sacrifice belongs to history.

And history will remember.
