HOLE
Per the dictionary, it is “a place where something is missing.” In a river, it is the place where the downstream current is missing. Seems to occur “behind” something, on the overall downstream side of something like a rock.

The Gila River and Gila Mountains of New Mexico have been home for Indigenous people for
thousands of years, for colonial Spanish and Mexican people for hundreds of years, and now for
all of those folks under the United States since 1912.

Saw this boat in the Grand a few summers ago just past Upset Rapid, river right. Saw the same folks a bit later. They were checking on some scientific gauges for a federal agency. Yeah, a bit vague. I was impressed with the pack raft in the Grand. Someday I might go for that
