She was just 6 when she found her purpose. Four decades later, the nation honoured her with a Padma Shri.

Born in a remote village in Dantewada, Dr Budhri Tati grew up witnessing the hardships faced by tribal communities in Bastar. After studying at a tribal welfare ashram, she decided to dedicate her life to helping others.

In the mid-1980s, when conflict and isolation kept many organisations away from the region, she chose to walk in.

For over 40 years, "Badi Didi" travelled on foot across 570 tribal villages, encouraging parents to send their children, especially girls, to school. Realising that distance made education inaccessible, she established a residential hostel for first-generation learners from remote forest settlements.

Her work went beyond education. She promoted maternal healthcare, formed women's self-help groups, supported livelihoods, and helped hundreds of women become financially independent.

Today, the woman who spent a lifetime walking through Bastar's forests to create opportunities for others has been honoured with the Padma Shri.
