Finding differences with each other is easy.

We should all rejoice in Christ, contend for truth with charity, and turn our attention to spreading the gospel to the lost.

On secondary matters, we may disagree strongly and still recognise one another as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sproul and Graham disagreed profoundly on aspects of soteriology, yet Sproul could still speak of Graham with deep affection and humility.

Truth matters. Doctrine matters. But so does remembering who the real enemy is.

Then your problem is not with John Piper.

Your problem is with Paul.

“For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth...” (Romans 9:11 KJV)

Before Jacob and Esau were born.

Before either had done good or evil.

God’s purpose according to election already stood.

Paul then continues:

“Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” (Romans 9:13)

And he immediately anticipates the objection:

“What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.” (Romans 9:14)

Why would Paul even need to answer the charge of injustice if he were merely teaching that God looked ahead and chose people based on what they would freely decide?

He continues:

“I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” (Romans 9:15)

Then comes the conclusion:

“So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” (Romans 9:16)

Not of human willing.

Not of human effort.

But of God who has mercy.

And lest anyone think election is based on foreseen merit, Paul says elsewhere that God:

“Hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.” (Ephesians 1:4)

And:

“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” (Ephesians 1:5)

According to what?

Our future decision?

Our foreseen faith?

Our goodness?

No.

“According to the good pleasure of his will.”

Again:

“Being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” (Ephesians 1:11)

Paul even tells Timothy that God:

“Hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (2 Timothy 1:9)

So yes.

Before you were born.

Before you had done anything good or evil.

Before the foundation of the world.

God’s electing purpose stood.

You can dislike Piper’s wording if you want.

But “mark and avoid” Romans 9, Ephesians 1, and 2 Timothy 1?

That may prove considerably more difficult.
