They lied about “only the rich” now every mum & dad investor, retiree, startup founder and young Australian trying to build wealth gets hammered.
This isn’t tax reform, it’s a declaration of war on aspiration, capital formation and Australia’s future.
We pay. They fail.

As for the West Bank- all and every violent act against peaceful Palestinians, need to be not just condemned, but charges should occur against the perpetrators.
“Under the proposed framework, gains are indexed but real losses are not fully recognised. As a result, the taxable gain rises to...higher than the investor’s total real economic gain and 82% higher than under the current system.”

@LyndaFrench19 Taxing tertiary students who work part time , and invest in the share market or crypto, to get a head start in life, 30% min on their gains help the homeless ?
Love to know how that works.
Here’s the executive summary from my submission to the Senate Committee on the proposed tax changes. Tried to keep it pretty focused as I’m sure others are addressing the many other issues including the 30% CGT minimum.
You will need a longer window and context.
Eg -when Australians start shedding direct share ownership, foreign investors could pick over the carcasses and buy good companies cheaper. If they are still happy investing in a regime that lie about changes to taxes, as they don’t pay CGT here.
And Super Funds arent affected, so no doubt the big Union Super Funds will be benefiting as well. At the expense of individuals.
So you might see greater contributions into individual Super Funds , if people can afford it.
You will definitely see a pivot from growth stocks to fully franked dividend payers.
Investment ? Well small caps will definitely miss out, don’t expect to see investment into Data centres to end, obviously.
Question for you-
If ten thousand young Australians cease investing in the share market, or change the quantum , but a foreign entity like BlackRock buys their position , is that a good thing for Australia?
How does having less in the pocket of those Australians help any of us? Or help them buy their home?
No,
It would mean that there would be a pivot from Trust ownership to Company ownership of assets .
People will still open a cafe , or a retailer if covered by existing small business ‘ concessions ‘. Meaning they anticipate selling for under $2m, etc. although I suspect fewer than what is traditionally the case.
But there will be lots of small business operators who will be contemplating their options for quite a while.
