Things are awful, but you've still gotta to eat. And it’s good to know that food choices can count as small quiet acts of resistance. Please subscribe to my substack Resistance Kitchen. https://t.co/ahzcI9aKmu
Raw milk. Herbal remedies. "Natural" diets. Hunting as the answer to sustainable eating.
The appeal to nature is everywhere in food discussions, and it does harm to people, animals and the planet. https://t.co/JQENKzshTT
here's the thing about this moronic anti-vegan discourse. there is a rich philosophical literature on these questions - dietary ethics, animal use, violence against animals, etc. - and on the nuances and contradictions therein, but the popular discourse is so paltry and unread.
A man chains his dog by the neck, and the dog chokes to death. The man is charged with animal cruelty.
Another man chains his dozens of cows by the neck every night, and one chokes to death. The man receives hundreds of sympathetic comments from NYT readers.
Twitter sucks because the culture of dunking on people and not reading hasn't changed. Legal Impact for Chickens (bad name) is an org dedicated to using litigation to reduce the harms done to the 9 Billion chickens killed in the USA every year. Making fun of them is not a dunk.
🚨NEW PUBLICATION!🚨
We reviewed virtually every major claim behind the seed oil hysteria, and the evidence doesn’t support the fear. The controversy is largely social media-driven, built on ecological correlations, mechanistic speculation, and flawed trials...
"[...] we should be very worried about what that decision represents: right-wing culture warriors’ successful poisoning of the public sphere, to the point that rational discussion about science and ethics is seen as politically disqualifying."
We are asking @NYCCouncil and @NYCMayor to fund $1.5 million for spay/neuter surgeries and $2 million for pet food pantries in the FY 2027 city budget. They need to hear from pet parents, rescuers, fosters, colony feeders, veterinary staff, animal shelter staff and nonprofits. Here's how to submit your testimony online. The deadline is Monday, March 23.
Excellent News ~ Well Done California 👏.
Wild animals should NEVER lose their lives just to become hunting trophies or for their pelts.
In California, an important step was taken to protect bobcats across the state by banning the hunting and trapping of these wild animals. The decision was welcomed by many wildlife advocates who have long argued that bobcats should be protected rather than hunted for their pelts.
For years, bobcats were targeted mainly for their fur, a practice conservation groups said was unnecessary and harmful. As public awareness about wildlife protection grew, more people began questioning why these animals were still being hunted at all.
Even before the statewide ban, several counties in California had already placed restrictions on bobcat trapping after concerns were raised about declining populations and the impact on local ecosystems.
Supporters of the new protections say bobcats play an important role in nature. As predators, they help maintain balance in the environment by controlling populations of smaller animals.
Animal advocates say the decision represents a broader shift in how people view wildlife, not as trophies or commodities, but as living creatures that deserve protection and respect.
Many conservation groups believe this step will help ensure bobcats remain part of California’s natural landscapes for generations to come.
A grim milestone: More than 200 million chickens, hens, and turkeys have died in the 2022-2026 bird flu outbreak. Most were killed by being roasted alive-sealing off air vents & letting the birds slowly die of heatstroke over hours. Here's what it looks like (in a lab setting):
Bird flu hit two massive egg farms last week, one in North Carolina, the other in Wisconsin. Combined almost 4.5 million hens were killed by producers closing off ventilation and letting the temperatures rise to slowly kill the birds via heatstroke over several hours.
@HPG_Farmer@fleroy1974 Even if that's true, given disproportionate amt of crops grown for animal ag (and waste of calories/protein from these crops) number of crop deaths for animal ag will always outweigh number killed to produce plant food for humans.
A vegan diet is not the only healthy way to eat. But it is the only healthy way to eat if you want to cause the least amount of harm to animals and the environment. That really is all we need to know about it.
@fleroy1974 Yes, all agriculture results in crop deaths. Animal ag kills many more b/c of vast amount of crops grown for feed. Not to mention the hundreds of millions of farmed animals killed every day.
Iron deficiency is common in young children esp if they drink too much cow’s milk. Choosing soy milk and pairing it with a fortified cereal can boost iron intake significantly. (Yes, both are “processed” foods. They are also healthy #realfood.)
It would probably be helpful at some point for journalists to explain to readers that ~75% of "intensive agriculture" is to produce meat (grow feed crops) and corn ethanol.
