Smith is using a recognizable technique. Propaganda analysts identified it in the 1930s and called it “transfer”: take the emotional charge already attached to one thing and carry it over to another by associating the two.
Trump is a foreign president attacking Canada’s economy, threatening key Canadian industries and talking openly about annexation. Trudeau was Canada’s elected prime minister, and he left office eighteen months ago. Smith is now asking Ontarians and Quebecers, in the middle of an active attack on their livelihoods, to attenuate their anger about Trump by dredging up legacy resentment about a former PM.
Her framing is profoundly cynical. Only Smith could try and disguise a deliberate and manipulative redirection of anger as an appeal for empathy.
Her sequence: exploit resentment, blur unlike things together, be unnecessarily divisive at the exact moment solidarity is worth most. The central move is to manufacture an internal enemy while an external one threatens us. The effect is to weaken one of Canada’s strongest assets in confronting Trump: a united national front.
Smith talks about others' anger while she is the one who is now stoking it on purpose (to divide Canadians rather than directed at the outrageous American tariffs).
After the sad spectacle of Smith's self-serving communication and weak leadership this week, the more justified anger in Alberta may be directed at a premier whose instinct, when Canada is attacked by a foreign power, is to gratuitously revive old regional resentments and signal more sympathy for the aggressor than solidarity with her own country.
@theoargitis “Annualized” what they are not mentioning is that 2.2 percent of growth was auto manufacturing pushing everything out before the doors close forever on September 8th. Michigans past is your future, there is no turning back.
@SenatorSlotkin Stfu you stupid bitch. Democrats like you destroyed Michigan with your free trade nafta bullshit and sent hundreds of thousands of jobs to scabs in Canada. You wonder why you have lost the working class? It’s because you betrayed the union workers. We couldn’t hate you more.
@CornwallHeath Hence why Canada is having a heart attack over the Auto tariffs. Imagine 25% of your highly paid manufacturers losing their jobs… oh wait that already happened in Michigan. I hope it’s at least 15% tariff that should be enough to bring them home you scabs.
@frankkolnacki Sitting in AP English. I then realized two of my classmates were missing, both were from Egypt, and had been picked up by their parents before the second tower was hit while it was still being called an “accident”
I think about that day a lot.
@Yoshi1040676 Yes!!! I’m begging all Canadians to do this please. Go all the way! Ban all American products, not just the booze. Shut off the power burn the bridges and brick up the tunnel!!!
@Malia_joo Absolutely and the employer should not only be charged with tax fraud but face steep fines and penalties including up to the loss of their business license for 5 years.
@JudiciaryDems Remember everyone that this is the line.
If they have a criminal record then it’s a non-violent crime
If they have a violent criminal record then it “Maryland man kidnapped from his family”
It’s all a lie, everything democrats say is a lie to destroy the country.
@joe97559604 Dude, your feed looks like you have the biggest hard on for Trump and America. It’s cool, you can suck all the cocks you like but try being less obsessed with US. It makes you look weak.
@ActualDemocrats Tariffs and strict immigration controls will be the most important geopolitical mechanisms of the next 50 years. They are needed so desperately in every area that without them the middle class is finished. Pro choice? More like pro murder of millions of black babies. MILLIONS.
@ambi_dex_trous@RavynSkye1@FBIDirectorKash The post was about some axe wound complaining about assembly lines leaving Canada to the U.S. via tariff like it’s wrong. I then noted democrat free trade and the weak Canadian dollar being the economic force. Canadian scabs work for less. So yeah fuck you, there’s no going back.
