Opinion: FIFA’s Voting Bloc Has Made Gianni Infantino Virtually Untouchable.

Calls for corrupt Gianni Infantino to resign are growing. Others hope he’ll be voted out at the next FIFA presidential election.

The problem? The numbers don’t support that outcome.

FIFA has 211 member associations. Each gets one vote, and 106 are needed to win the presidency.

Infantino already has public backing from:
• CONMEBOL (10)
• CAF (54)
• AFC (47)

That’s 111 declared votes, already past the winning threshold before any challenger has even entered the race.

So while many countries & UEFA may criticize FIFA’s direction or oppose decisions made during World Cup 2026, criticism alone doesn’t translate into votes. Unless a significant number of member associations reverse their support, any challenge starts from a losing position.

Infantino was re-elected unopposed in 2019 and 2023. Based on the current landscape, his path to another term appears far stronger than many critics would like to admit.

He knows he’s effectively untouchable under the current system and, as a result, appears largely indifferent to the criticism directed at him.

Whether you believe or not his corrupt leadership has damaged world football is a matter of opinion. The electoral arithmetic, however, is much harder to argue with.

Tell me without telling me that FIFA under Gianni Infantino has a serious credibility problem.

Reversing a red-card suspension to allow the USA’s Balogun to play against Belgium sets a dangerous precedent, in my view. If reports are accurate that political pressure played a role, then that’s deeply concerning.

A red card has always meant a one-match suspension. If exceptions are made for one team or one player, the integrity of the competition is called into question.

Add to that the controversy surrounding the treatment of Iran’s national team, visa issues affecting some overseas supporters, and several debated VAR decisions, and it’s understandable why many fans feel this World Cup is not being administered consistently.

Football’s rules should apply equally to everyone, regardless of the host nation or political influence.

Which is an interesting interpretation of both ceasefires & international law.
