Since all sorts of people have asked me, I decided to write down my current thoughts on "What's the Future for Pure Math Research in the Age of AI?"

Karl Popper, in his Open Society, describes to a "T" the crowd of unelected patronizing "experts" who want to run the lives of people and call those who oppose them "populists". Beautiful Plato vs Socrates passage.
Someone jumps into the mess, naively, and discovers what works.
It gets put into textbooks, because it works.
Then people get hired to teach what works as fundamentals, as though they precede discovery.
Students develop a natural aversion to the backwards dryness of what is being "taught."
Worse, companies hire those who do well at backwards dryness, expecting them to discover the next great thing.
You should love learning, but hate education.
A great endeavor, this self-study of complex variables. This is the most pleasurable recreational mathematics.
Real mathematics starts with complex analysis. And the shortest (and most scenic) route between two reals transits through the complex!
Real communication and frequent creativity is about as close to true happiness as you’re going to get.
They both take something internal and give it a form in the shared world.
I have been accurately seen.
Something now exists because I acted.
You are converting experience into connection or form. That produces coherence, movement, feedback, and evidence that you can affect the world.
Happiness or contentment is not something you permanently acquire. The feeling of aliveness has to be continually renewed through expression, agency, and contact.
A lot of us are so desensitised to the Quran but if you really go and read literature, sacred texts, and poetry and then approach the Quran with a fresh pair of eyes and ears, you’ll really realise how monumentally different and grand it is. The Arabs were so stunned by it, that even the disbelievers couldnt decide if Muhamad was a great poet or someone who used Jinn and Magic to charm them with sublime words. These were people who didnt hand out the description of a “poet” willy nilly, it was the greatest skill and talent to master. Imagine hearing something so different, so new, youre accusation of the author is: he must be employing magic.
So two good things:
1) LLMs threaten the performative aspect of mathematics as a competitive spectator sport limited to a narrow group of savantic misfits.
2) LLMs help spread mathematical knowledge by favoring mathematically adept nonnerdy nonsavantic users.
