Letter #20 is here!
Indonesian banks are lending again, fast. Loans grew 12.1% YoY, but deposits only 8.1%. State-bank lending is running at roughly 26%, while private banks are barely growing. The credit cycle is back, but funding is getting more expensive.
Meanwhile, Gold rallied 14% MTD after Treasury buybacks pushed yields lower. Yields are already reversing ahead of Jackson Hole, making the short-term rally more fragile, even as central-bank buying continues to support the longer-term case.
1. Strong credit growth, expensive funding.
2. Strong Gold rally, rising yields.
We break down both in Meridian Letter #20.
