I would like to apologise on behalf of us dynamic Zulus who are open minded and would never use a derogatory name to describe another South African nationality who resides in KZN if they are not Zulus.

For those who have been following me since I was a virgin on these streets, you’ll know that I left my province in the 90s to study in the Vaal. My roommate was from Chiawelo, and luckily for me, she spoke Zulu. That’s when I realised how important it was to learn other languages….and I did so with ease.

Post-tertiary, I worked in Joburg, a truly diverse City of Gold.

Around 2018, I discovered this gem called Limpopo and began doing a lot of assignments there. I was fully embraced by every tribe in Limpopo, including Dick. I travelled across most regions, and in the Vhembe region, Thohoyandou they named me Makhadzi.

I was told this name was bestowed as a sign that I had been adopted. At different points, I worked with Eastern Cape Tourism and Northern Cape Tourism, in addition to Gauteng Tourism and the Joburg Tourism Company, among others.

Across all these experiences, I worked with people from different nationalities many of whom were not Zulu. I even visited Orania, where I never felt like I didn’t belong. We dined there and stayed at Wonderboom, just outside Orania.

And by the way, here in KZN, our departments and public entities are made up of people from many different nationalities as well.

As they say, travelling opens up your mind ….and teaches you that belonging has no borders.

I met @kasiflavour10 a few years ago and was struck by his rare ability to make old-school football culture feel current again—rooted in township memory, not nostalgia-for-sale.

We spoke about the ongoing debate about Kasi Flavor versus Old School brands.

It was a long overdue conversation as I was genuinely unsettled when I walked into an “old school” shop in Sandton and, for a moment, thought I was in his store. The aesthetic. The merchandise. The storytelling. It felt unmistakably his lane—until I realised it wasn’t.

Of course noone owns football.

But storytelling has authorship. There's no mistaking Kabelo's imprint in the category.

I hope the Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) looks into this—and that the township market, especially young consumers, votes with its heart and conscience, not just price and proximity.

Support the originators. Not just the amplifiers with deep pockets. That's the only way we are going to incentivize the youth to create and alleviate unemployment.
